My cousin worked at a plant here in town, that made parts similar to this using metal powder. He brought home a couple before they were heat treated, ("Sintered") and one that was treated. He gave me the hardened one that was treated and asked if I could break it. Obviously I couldn't. Meawhile he had the untreated ones and was just snapping them in peices. Man my 10 yr old brain thought he was the strongest person ever 😂

Powdered Tungsten carbide and iron pressed parts are amazing. What I always find amazing is how they know exactly how oversize to make the part so the shrinkage from sintering is offset

Powder sintering was for sure something new back in 1918 but not unheard of. Also, the end result of the part looks like a casting, so not so strange. Now, if you showed them a part from a metal 3d printer with impossible internal features and told them to guess how it was made then they'd probably look at it like it was some sort of an alien artifact. They would see something that couldn't be made through casting, forging or traditional subtractive manufacturing... Impossibru

Too many years in powdered metal for Toyota engine parts. Compacting is shown here pressing material mix with wax for lubrication and hold shape. Sintering has a DWD zone to de-wax the parts before hitting high heat zones and cooling zone before unloading. Next process could be machining or sizing. Sizing is to correct any deformation that happens at sintering. Spent time in Japan visiting different plants and seeing many different material blends and applications. Fun stuff.

Doesn't it need to be heated afterwards so it doesn't crumble?

It's called powder metallurgy. The structure is porous so suited better for oil cooling and other application. Also densities of final parts and thus weight are lower.

That's cool i use the same tech at my last job but we mostly used a nickel steel or a titanium powder. Do you also cinder your parts ? Also what are they for ? We were making precision filtration systems that go on every thing from missiles to implants that go in your eye

Very cool! Theoretically this should be as strong as any other piece of iron, for metals just pushing the atoms together form a metal bond. But oxides would surely be problematic. Is this done unter a nitrogen or argon atmosphere or in air?
