The partnership between the director and the designers of a play is crucial for the life and success of a run. This is especially true when your set takes on major characterizations, surrounds your performers with history and perspective, and the titular character is a customized piano that weaves through plot and spectacle.

Such is the collaboration between director LaTanya Richardson Jackson and scenic designer Beowulf Boritt on the revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. Watch as they tell the story of creating a space to share Wilson's words with a vision that grows the play to new levels and brings audiences to a deeper understanding of this family.

You guys should really think about creating some guided viewing questions for students viewing any of the american theatre wing videos! I love using these in my theatre classroom SO MUCH.
