Steve, your videos on bonding agents for concrete are the best I've found on the internet. Thank you for taking the time to explain this with great clarity and knowledge!!

Hi Steve, I asked this question in the comments of one of your other videos and you seem to have answered it here. I've been told by a mason that these concrete/masonry additives, known as "concrete bonding adhesive" or "concrete fortifier" are just watered down PVA glue. These "bonding agents" typically sell for $35 to $45 per gallon. A gallon on PVA glue (school glue or any TiteBond product) sells for $15 to $20 per gallon, can be thinned with water (50/50), to a milk consistency, to make two gallons of "concrete bonding adhesive" (a $70 to $90 value). Concrete and mortar products are fairly inexpensive building and repairing materials, but "specialty additives" to improve bonding and performance can quickly elevate the costs.

I've been told by a stone mason that a PVA "concrete bonding adheisive" can be substituted with White PVA School Glue for interior concrete projects and repairs only. Water that soaks into concrete in exterior applications will re-emulsify the standard PVA glue and cause the bond to release. For exterior applications an "Acrylic Concrete Fortifier" is required, which will not re-emulsify when subjected to moisture.

Would you recommend this method for resurfacing outdoor concrete stairs?

I'm confused. At the end of your video, you said, "that bonding adhesive is what you would use BETWEEN the layer of old concrete and new concrete that you're trying to get to bond to it" which implies that the bonding adhesive and water goes onto the old concrete first, then you pour your new concrete. I had always assumed that the bonding would be mixed in with the new concrete mixture. Will you please clarify?

thank you for this. i'm trying to secure a crumbly lime and sand/rubble foundation before rendering with a Lime Mortar. (foundation made from the banks of the local river) will this work and do i just mix bonding adhesive with water and paint it on? i really do need some assistance with this.

What glue or brand glue you recommend that mixes well wet cement?

He is right about glue. But I think some type of epoxy is better than wood glue. I am currently performing a test in my pool by adding a very strong epoxy between the gunite and pebble-Tec surface. I think it will be a superior watertight bond.

Wow, I thought you rolled this stuff on the old concrete with a roller? But in fact it’s just added to the new wet mix?

Hey, just watched your video, great information I brought a 4 litre tub of 'ComCrete Multipurpose Bonding & Sealant Agent' from the hardware shop a few months ago .... it smells sort of like PVA and is white in colour. It states its a Adhesive, Sealing Coat, Bond Coat, Tiling Bond Coat ect and a 'Admix' (with a 1:10 water ratio) ... what Does Admix mean ? ... ...does this mean when added to grout it becomes 'Cement Based Adhesive' ? looking forward to hearing from you .... (P.s ... Im in Tasmania Australia)

Hey Steve what would I use to connect two pieces of old concrete that snapped and broke off? My fancy mailbox was attached to the metal pole via concrete and it looks like it failed and snapped off. Thanks!

I want to patch up a very small portion of my concrete block step which is only bout 6 in x 4 in x 1 in deep with ready mix concrete. I don't want to buy a bonding adhesive just for that small job, If I don't use concrete bonding adhesive, will the new concrete still adhere to the old. If not, is there any allernative cheap method to make that happens?
