I've always rubbed my thumb on my oily nose and then rub the reed in one direction, base to the tip. I use "nose oil" on my little fingers too to help them glide over the G# key pad and the lower C and E flat keys.

out of curiosity... couldn't you put some sort of compound on it instead like beeswax for instance? that wouldn't only seal the pores but would offer some protection towards saliva.
would that make sound of the instrument suffer?
