what causes diabetes?
Diabetes is one of the most confusing health topics on the internet, esp. what causes diabetes.

today we have a leading diabetologist to shed some light on this issue

Prof. Roy Taylor has been studying type 2 diabetes for almost 40y. he has authored numerous studies and books on diabetes and he spearheaded the DIRECT trial showing type 2 diabetes can be reversed

so what causes type 2 diabetes?
we all accumulate fat subcutaneously, but when those stores are full, the body starts storing the excess fat inside the organs

next time we’ll look at the exact approach they used to reverse diabetes

I have heard a lot about insulin resistance in cells (muscle cells especially) as a possible cause of Type 2 Diabetes. Is this part of your guest's hypothesis as well? What I took away from this interview is that fact accumulation in the pancreas affects the ability of the Beta cells to produce insulin. Since insulin is a hormone that responds to a rise in blood sugar, does it mean that your guest thinks T2D is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin? That sounds more like a mild form of T1D to me. Will this be clarified in the next episode?

I could listen to this gentleman hours and hours. He has such a simple and gentle way of explaining things and he doesn't rush, he makes the necessary pause, in order to help us process the information.

This is amazing, I figure this is the same for fatty liver disease and NASH (I have NASH and never have been overweight). Switched to a stricter Mediterranean diet with the help of my nutritionist and liver specialist, and slowly recovering. I love Roy and Dr. Robert Lustig, they opened my eyes to quitting processed foods.

From what I understand from this great video: 1) Don't over-eat and 2) Avoid processed food

Thanks Dr. Gil - another great video on a very misunderstood topic. The biggest misconception I see from friends and family (several who have diabetes) is that they confuse the symptoms of the disease with the cause. For instance, they conclude that since you get issues of spiking blood glucose levels in response to eating certain foods that it means that those foods are bad and need to be avoided since long term consumption will lead to diabetes. This is the argument I see many low carb proponents using to convince people that a low carbohydrate diet is the only approach that makes sense to avoid or deal with diabetes.

Never heard a better, more simple description. Just left-out people who also exceed the fat storage capacity in their muscle cells.

I’m an archaeologist, not a physician. By virtue of my own investigations, I formed the same aetiology for diabetes, and have been advocating a similar care plan as ProfessorTaylor, these past two-and-a-half millennia. My friends, however, have resolutely refused to follow my advice — not so much because of my lack of medical credentials, but chiefly because of my “horrible delivery”. Dr. Taylor, by contrast, is not only eminently qualified to make such diagnostic and therapeutic pronouncements, but antithetically to myself, is also a very nice man. Bravo, Drs. Taylor and Carvalho! 👍

Asian people tend to have lighter frames, so their BMI is not a very good indicator of how much body fat they actually have, especially visceral fat. Just going by BMI, you'ld think Asian-Americans have no obesity, few are "overweight", and therefore no diabetes risk, for instance, but Asian-Americans have significant problems with diabetes in the US, especially those of south Asian ancestry.

Thanks for this interview with professor Taylor and sharing with us! The processing foods is so hard to get rid of!

Dr. Carvalho, one thing that is unclear to me:
If the body has an unlimited capacity to store body fat, why is there a fat threshold where people start storing fat in the other organs, thereby causing IR/T2D?

Hi Doc I love your videos, they are informative and actionable. I would love to see a similar high quality detailed video on High Blood Pressure and Asthma.
