At 25:00 it's asked if it's a sin to not be a member of a church? I attended Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa for 15 years back in the 70's and 80's and they did not have membership and I attended a few other churches that made you a member if you took a class but now Ive been at a Presbyterian church for 15 years and no one said I needed to be a member until the pastor retired and he said I should "throw my had in" so to speak and take a membership oath. So I read the oath and it has some nonsensical grammar so I asked if I could make up my own oath and the pastor said NO!. . . WOW! I can make up my own marriage vow but not a membership vow? So that's kind of hardened my heart to the idea of it now because I would have otherwise been willing, even though I don't believe in taking oaths that are not necessary or binding and one sided witch the now retired pastor understood. When you get married at least the oath is two sided but with membership it's not and it's not binding because you can simply leave that Church for another one. You promise to make the church like your father or mother but they give no promise in return. I took an oath at baptism that's not that different then membership oath. So why a congregation oath that goes beyond a confession of faith or a creed?
