I think he's combining the phrase "gag me with a spoon" and they nursery rhyme "hey diddle diddle" when the dish runs away with the spoon.

As a fellow North Carolinian, I also heard “something, something… gag me with a spoon.”

His accent really came through when he said "I'll have to call her".

You wanna know what my mom lied to me for years about? She told me Klondike bars had alcohol in them and wasn't for children. I believed that until I was 18 😑

It's from the movie Valley Girl the main character girl says, "Like, Oh mahGoddd, Gag me with a spoon" in a total Valley Girl accent. My Mom used to say it too. She was making fun of the movie.

"Gag Me With a Spoon" was a phrase used by "Valley Girls" in the early 1980s to show disgust with something. Also called "Valley Speak", it is related to "Surf Speak" (where we get words like Gnarly, Tubular, and Awesome). Valley Speak is associated with using the word "like" multiple times in a sentence as a filler word.

"Gag me with a spoon" was a super common saying for quite a while. Especially mid eighties to early nineties. I believe it was a Valley-girl thing. And it was also used in a taunt or cheer. Something like "chicka, chicka, chicka gag me with a spoon." I honestly don't remember the cheer very well but they used to chant that in P.E. in elementary school... I believe there's also a part about riding motorcycles or something, not kidding.

I remember that from the 80's sitcom You've Got Gale. Gale would say gag me with a spoon to everything.

In Girl Scouts we would sing boom chicka boom and the valley girl style ends with gag me with a spoon.

Somebody floated the possibility that it's a version of the call-and-repeat song Boom Chika Boom. There was a version where a verse was sung in Valley Girl style.

Gag me with a spoon was a phrase from the 80s, very Valley Girl speak.

Gag me with a spoon was something the kids in elementary school used to tell me every day in the 1980’s-1990’s.
