In this interview, Emer talks to top UK performer and session singer, Mary Carewe about her experience working at the top of the session world for artists as diverse as Westlife and Eric Clapton, as well as her work as a top solo concert performer both in the UK and abroad.
Mary talks about her early career in music and the thrill of performing all the female songs from the hit musical, 'Follies' for the composer, Stephen Sondheim in the revised London version of his show. She shares her experience working alongside Miriam Stockley on Karl Jenkins' 'Adiemus' series of albums, a project that demonstrated not only Mary's unique ability to work with other singers, blending her voice and complimenting their vocal naunces, but also her ability to create a vocal sound that was unique and ground-breaking for an album that is just as exciting and relevant today as it was when it was released in 1995.
Throughout the interview Mary talks about the need to be a well rounded musician, including the benefits of being able to sight sing in today's music business, drawing on her experience as a vocal contractor with her vocal agency, Voxaphonic to discuss the various demands made of singers. She also gives us a fascinating insight into the specialised and quite demanding world of singing on movie soundtracks, discussing elements such as the lack of key signatures and the issues this can raise for singers!!
Mary draws us into the world of a backing vocalist as she gives us tips on singing backing vocals and performing as part of a vocal ensemble, explaining the role of a backing singer, and the importance of working with your fellow backing singers to create a performance that is sensitive to the lead vocalist and their style and sound. She also talks about her preparation routine for vocal sessions and solo performances (with orchestras around the world), as well as the importance understanding the lyrics and interpreting a song so you can deliver the best performance possible.
Throughout the interview Mary's amazing experience, depth of knowledge, and her enthusiasm for music and singing is evident as she delivers an interview that is engaging and fascinating for singers and non-singers alike.
Sit back and enjoy!!!
