Just came back from seeing it. I'm not sure why so many moviegoers thought it was boring. They had to know it wouldn't be an action movie. 😅 Families aren't perfect, humans aren't perfect. Once we own up to that we can move forward in peace. The Mule explores that wonderfully. This movie wasn't perfect but it was damn good. I give it a solid B.

Here's my two cents on the race issue with the character of Earl: He says ignorant things but is friendly and supportive of people from different backgrounds (he even bonds with the Mexican handler who is mean to him). He reminds me of my late grandpa in that way -- the WWII generation who likes all people but grew up with backwards racial language which it slips out sometimes, just out of habit.

Man I went in wanting a gritty film and got that and more following Clint. He was awesome in this role, so many funny parts bro! Lol and his cleverness to get out of situations was dope! 😊 He gave me a solid film from beginning to end 💯✊✊Great review! 😊

Just saw this yesterday. I was very surprised when it was over. I kept thinking there was going to be a kidnapping of the daughter or family member. I don’t know why I thought there was a kidnapping in the film based on the trailer...maybe I had it confused with another movie. It was good from what I saw. Clint Eastwood did a great job. It just seems like it was going to be his final role. He is getting up there in age. He almost about to be in his 90’s... I was reading about him and wow he has a lot of children 8 I think that he knows of maybe more...he has lived a full life. Really time to retire and this is the film to make it his last and final film...I looked up Kirk Douglas and can you believe he is 102 years old....

The way Clint portrays race doesnt seem forced, it's real. I like how he doesnt pretend like no one cares about it like other movies do, or he doesnt exaggerate it either make it a central focus like other movies do.
It comes off as real and natural, which is why I was excited (I'm Mexican) when I heard he was doing a cartel movie. He it the gang culture SPOT ON. And even the differences between Mexican and Chicano gang culture.
I will always respect Clint Eastwood because he is REAL about stuff. These other folks in Hollywood come off as fake, they clearly dont give a shit about us they just want brownie points for pretending to care about race.

Coming from a mixed family I feel I have a unique view of what Clint was doing in the film when it came to race. My mother is 3 of 5 kids. My mother and her brother married white people. Her 3 sisters married men of color Latino, Black, and mixed Asian. There are a total of 12 cousins on my mothers side. 6 of us look white 6 look non-white because they took after their father. All of use are at most 11 years apart. When we hang out people dont believe we are related. We have gone to clubs or parties together in the 90s where people said racist things about me that my non-white cousins had to address and on the flip side I have gotten into fights when white people said racist stuff about my cousins. in the 2000's things are a lot more mellow but not in the Rodney King era in L.A.

Back to my main point after that set up, The part where Earl helped the "Negro" family change a tire. He was making 3 points in that scene. 1. About age and how younger people (some not all) are less self reliant. Technology has taken away a lot of knowledge that is normally past on from one generation to another. My dad taught me how to put gas in a car, change a tire, ask get a loan from a bank, today my kids didnt want my help, "I'm good dad I watched it on YouTube". 2. Earl's use of the term Negro. Now when I was a kid I still heard older black family members call themselves Negro. My Uncle Leroy's parents were wonderful caring people that called themselves and their friends Negros. If they were alive they would be around Earl's age in the movie. Earl meant no ill will, it just showed a man that was set it his ways and was taught in a different era. If he was "racist" would he have stopped to help? No, he would have used words or insults worse than Negro and drove off. 3. The insight and sensibility of the Black woman in addressing the situation show the 3 point. People need to stop being so over sensitive and getting triggered by every little thing. In some movies the black couple would have flow off the handle at what he said and caused a major issue. In other movies the Black coupe would have been weak and just taken his indiscretion as a personal insult but because they needed his help they would have become subservient to Earl. They did the best option, they spoke up and had a dialogue with Earl in an calm and adult manner. He and She expressed their opinion and Earl being a good man (stopping to help) but from a different time took what they had to say that learned from it. Each generation was helping and learning from each other which goes back to my 1st point.

In closing, I think the whole scene can be summed up this way, "Your Black, I'm White, what the fuck does that have to do with changing a tire?"

This looks like a slower movie 🍿 compared to his other action pact ones, but I bet the acting his and Bradley’s will be superb ...

2 things-
1. White privilege, and the entire notion of such a thing is absurd
2. The whole idea of Earl is that he’s out of touch. He doesn’t know much about the cartels, he lost his business to internet salespeople, and he thinks about how his failure to his family quite a bit. That’s why he called the black family negro people. He kept to himself and his daylily farm after his family estranged him so to speak, and he didn’t really like to get out much. He kept to a select few (his employees and the Daylily league folks), and as stated earlier, since he is opposed to the use of internet, he most likely isn’t up to date on current events. Besides, Earl wasn’t being racist in the movie. Take when he pulled over to the black family. He called them negro people, but he still helped them. That isn’t him being ‘racist’. If he was portrayed as such, he would’ve seen their skin color, and drove off. Plain and simple

Hi there! Random dude on the Internet here. I’d say it’s genuine. If you look at his political beliefs, he’s been a democrat, a republic, and independent or libertarian. It’s in an endearing way. The scene that with the Mexican character who is paranoid about losing his life when they pulled him over in the film. I thought it was done tastefully because you see how stressed and how dangerous it is for him and the other characters look at him apprehensively and confused but they still do the job but they’re afraid because now they’re seeing like the weight of the actions and what is so scary about that situation.

He makes racist jokes in the film but it isn’t of superiority or anything. He likes to toy with race but then he gives those serious moments to show that there is a sort of dissonance and unbalance with the world and race.

I think Clint Eastwood is being Authentic and Honest and doesn't give a $%#$ about anybodies feelings, don't be a victim

Good and fair comments. And I do think Clint pushes issues with race and other issues, but I think it is to just make us think really hard about things. Unforgiven was a western, but he really pushed some social issues in that movie. I think he just likes to inspire a thought process. Your review is fair and good.

I think he is laying out problems that you will see in the real world. A Korean War veteran won't be up to date with the latest etiquette regarding interactions with people of other races. These differences exist, and because he shows it on screen it doesn't mean he is being apologetic about it. This might sound obvious but no every war film director glorifies war. Some of them do, yes. But not all. Is Steven Spielberg being apologetic about WWII? How about the holocaust?
The way I see it, he uses humor to navigate the tension that these differences arise. Contrary to what everybody is doing nowadays, he chooses not to problematize everything. There's a whole industry already devoted to that way of approaching the world. He's offering an alternative. While many will denounce the movie as racist with solemn outrage, I consider it quite refreshing and warm-hearted.

to respond to your question, i saw a lot of the same racial messages as gran torino. which is that we are all human, and that getting upset over words and fighting about our differences is pointless compared to real issues, like how blacks and mexicans are treated by police.
