Those 3 men listening to her sing were Alain Boublil (lyricist of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables), Cameron McKintosh (biggest producer and king of West End musicals and Broadway too) and Nicholas Hytner (the director of some of the most successful musicals and plays in the West End and Broadway). Of course, on the piano was Claude Michel Schonberg, music composer of Les Miserables and Miss Saigon.
They went all over the world looking for a young girl to play the role of Kim. They found not only Lea but several other Kims and other cast members when they called for auditions in Manila.

I know you've seen more about Lea now, but for anyone who may be checking out this vid and not the others: Lea Salonga was a successful performer in the Philippines. She had been performing since the age 7: theater, albums, concerts, tv and film. Lea was 17 during the audition process for MISS SAIGON. She had a lot of experience already, but auditioning for the creators of LES MISERABLES (the latest hit musical) is a big deal. I'm sure the creators saw thousands of women altogether to find their leading lady - there were auditions in London, New York, Los Angeles (I don't remember if there was another California city - San Diego? San Francsico?), Honolulu and finally Manila. MISS SAIGON was Lea's first international project and she won critical acclaim plus all the major theater awards in England and the USA. Lea would go on to be the singing voices of two Disney princesses - Jasmine and Mulan. Lea is about to turn 52 and she still looks and sounds beautiful. So many great performances to check out!!!

A lot kept saying she was 18 during the audition but actually she was only 17 that time. She turned 18 when she started rehearsals timely for her to get a go signal from her parents to do semi mature roles to be able to do the kissing scenes and wearing very skimpy bikini on stage.

Lea is a legend. She and Morissette are the singers that I admired the most.👌💖💖💖

She was only 18 then, but she was actually already a veteran of the stage and also in recording. She did many stage plays as a kid, including the title role for Annie at 10 yrs old i think. She was also a child recording star and was also doing a lot of commercials and endorsements at the time.
