Brexit did not happen immediately after the Brexit referendum in 2016. There were exhausting negotiations between the UK and the EU first about the exit of the UK and then about the future relationship between the EU and the UK.
After the official Brexit on January 31st in 2020, where the UK officially left the EU and with it the Parliament, there was a transitional period until December 31st in 2020 to implement the new relationship.
There are some longer transitional periods for some areas, but this was the main one.
People are talking a lot about the level of preparation for Brexit on different sides or the lack of.

The EU is NOT punishing British Travellers and Immigrants.

The EU is protecting its own borders and, as Britain left the EU it is being treated like any other non-EU country such as the USA, Russia, Egypt etc.

The EU can do whatever it wants to protect its borders as can Britain.

Brexit - the gift which keeps on taking.

Brexiteers - you won, now get over it.

nobody is punishing the UK, you wanted to leave, live with it

The U.K. was one of the main advocates for the new travel rules. Cameron was a massive proponent of it.
The U.K. left and the EU owes us nothing. I’m devastated we left and ashamed of my country

When Britain was part of the EU we argued the case for stringent rules regarding imports into the EU, and also for people arriving to the EU from outside. Now that we're not part of the EU, those rules apply to us.

Duuhhhh!

The EU is not punishing British travellers and immigrants after Brexit. British travellers and immigrants get exactly the same treatment as people from Australia or Uganda or Argentina, which is exactly what Brexiters voted for.

Brexiters are bunch of whingers. When in the EU they whinged on and on about being in the EU and now we're outside the EU they're whinging on and on about being outside the EU.

"Waaaah! I voted brexit and ignored what all the sane people told me would happen and now those things happened and it must be someone else's fault!".

"What they didn't expect where the trade-offs." I can't recount how many times I saw online debates where remainers and others pointed out all the negative consequences that would have to be expected - like additional passport checks or travel costs; every single time, the Brexiteers would claim that this was (A) "project fear" and nothing of it would come to pass for some magical reason, or (B) that it was all perfectly well worth it.

Until it actually happened. Now they're all whining like angry toddlers.

Nobody is being "punished" by the EU.
The people who voted for brexit are punishing all of us in UK.

The Brits helped writing the rules they now have to follow!

They wanted to be a third country, now they want to complain about the consequences.
Typical Brexitter view.

I can’t fathom what the English still don’t understand? As a U.S. citizen, I always expect to follow the entry rules for ANY country (such as Canada or Mexico right next door). Have the English become so arrogant that their minds cannot process this change THEY voted for?

Reminds one of the old corporate phrase "I got what I asked for but it wasn't what I needed". It seems the UK leapt before it looked.

As a British retiree living in France for 28 years, I would also add that the French authorities have been more than helpful in securing permanent residency status for us, and many others, when we were abandoned without any voting rights for Brexit. There seems to be an attitude of resentment in the UK, not only towards the EU, but also towards any Brits living in Europe. We did not all come here for sunshine and cheap booze, and live in ghettoes with other Brits. Some of us just wanted a quiet place to retire to, and make the effort to speak the local language so that we 'belong'. Others work here. Stop whingeing, and live with the Brexit which you had the stupidity to vote for: we have to.

Now our fellow Europeans should understand why the Aussies call us "whinging poms". (If anyone doubted it during our membership.) We never behaved as Europeans. How many of us knew how the EU works? Continually demanding exceptional treatment. Where was the education in schools? Who exposed the Brexiter's lies about sovereignty? Stitched up by a campaign that broke electoral rules, for the ultimate benefit of the greedy few.

The Brits were told these changes would affect them if they left.

The EU is simply treating British citizens as what they voted to be; citizens of a non-EU country. The reaction of some sections of the British public (specifically Brexit supporters) to this is childish and hypocitical to say the least.

Bullies become victims when challenged, seen from that perspective there is no surprise here.
