I review, breakdown and explain the 2003 movie Oldboy. I discuss the true meaning of what happened during the ending when Dae-Su was laughing and smiling. I react to the hallway fight scene, characters such as Mi-Do, Woo-Jin and Soo-Ah. I analyze the movie's core themes of revenge and how it impacted the individuals.

After watching it i actually realized the face he makes at the end mimics the one in the painting with the quote "Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you weep alone."
He has now realized he is the monster, and is weeping alone. Because Mi-do is still ignorant of the truth and Woo-jin is gone

That scene at the end when Dae-Su is begging, pleading....just so powerful.

Another reason it never pops in your head is coz the director very carefully planted in our minds is that Mido is abroad with adopted parents. So no one would ever go to that

It is absolute agony how many people I've tried an failed to show this masterwork, just due to the language barrier. This movie is truly beyond words.

Film just hit Netflix. I watched it hearing it was good. Probably the best movie that I have ever seen. But I am not sure I ever want to see it again.

If Oh Dae-su had killed him before he found out the reason...I'm pretty sure it would have come up naturally that she was his daughter. Kinda like, " So...what about your parents? Know anything about them?"

A movie that was so good in what it was trying to be. That I dont want to see it again. Truly a masterwork.

I have to say that, yes, the plot twist with his daughter is quite shocking and disturbing. But what made me personally feel uneasy and disturbed beyond words, was how he completely humiliated himself before the antagonist. How he destroyed his dignity and humanity at his feet, the feet of the man he hates most in the world, the feet of the man who destroyed his life completely. And yet, he had to kneel down and beg for forgiveness. Until he had to cut out his tongue. And the most painful thing is, it is unfair, the punishment is not proportional to his damage. Yes, he "created" his sister's rumor, but in the end it was true. He did not control what happened next. The real villain And the only real monster here is the antagonist. Who won.

I didnt interpret the Dae Su seeing the foot steps as realizing hes stuck with the secret. He is split into 2 persons so only one would remember but with each step the monster grows old and slowly dies with the truth and all that is left is Dae Su. Which explains why his smile also has pain behind it. He feels both relief and suffering. The only thing wrong is that if Dae Su doesnt remember and his daughter doesnt know so then what do they do? It mightve been better to tell her and move on rather then hypnotize himself and have Mi Do think they're still together romantically. Which is even worse because I was hoping they would hypnotize both him and Mi-Do so they believe they were a family all along while forgetting the rest.

There is something nobody mentions. At the end the one who searched vengance was the antagonist. And at the end he was the only one who could not keep living after everything. But the protagonist could

I pity anyone that thinks that subtitled movies aren't worth watching. Those people are seriously missing out. Everything about Old Boy is incredible. And heartbreaking.

I don’t know if I agree with the analysis on the hallway fight scene. When watching that scene it felt like he wasn’t truly winning. He won, but the fight didn’t feel real, it felt somehow realistic but unrealistic. Like it had the classic fight scene problem of “20 goons choose to fight 1 by 1 while giving loads of pauses and breaks to the protagonist” but it didn’t seem forced. It makes sense in retrospect knowing how the villain was so many steps ahead, it’s likely that they were told to fight but lose on purpose, and that comes across perfectly. The goons want to hurt him and want to rlorotect themselves, but somehow always pause just as they’re about to overpower him. Looking back it’s executed so perfectly.

I seen this movie today in the theater and even I've seen Incendies, the plot twist left me speechless and disgusted for a half hour back to my home

One of my favourite movies, simply amazing. But I don't think I will ever be able to watch it again. It just makes me so sad...

I got to meet the director at MIFF who explained it was meant to show the pain of violence and not the "cool" interpretation that it ended up getting.

Oldboy 2003 is in fact one of my comfort movies. Still watch it on a regular basis because the film is just that damn good. I reckon in the end he remembers everything but desides to keep the secret to spare his daughter. So in a supremely dark way the relationship continues because i know for a fact he won't want to lose her again by leaving or dying. Depending on your moral compass you may find that beautiful or horrifying so in a way this movie also teaches you what kind of person you are.

I was totally sure the first time I saw this, that the last smile was so strong it turned into a grin, so he got some kind of a redemption. Now it just feels very ambiguous what he remembers and what not, but I still want to believe that Dae-su doesn't remember Mi-do is his daughter. But the painting with the quote, Dae-su's similar facial expression being a returning theme, and the pro-con factors of the hypnosis make it indeterminable I think. Everyone can make their decision. Interesting that during the ending music, although bittersweet but I'm always left with the strong feeling of love, which is outstanding from a movie with such negative themes.
