I love how the characters in this anime is best on real authors. And I also love how Dazai asks if there really any value in living because it definitely reminds me of the novel no longer human written by the real Osamu dazai.

I love how the comments are all like "a 14 year old would say this" but the line actually matches up perfectly with the character in book the irl Osamu Dazai wrote

No matter how much his suicidal behavior becomes a joke later on w the ADA the way they wrote it here honestly hits different, they wrote someone who’s honestly lost the will to live. Literal chills

I really love how realistically they portrayed depression in this anime. Dazai started as a traumatized child, developing depression. On the outside he seems numb and confident but that's just a mask, way of protecting himself from further damage. Then you see that in reality he's just neck-deep in mental illness and can't seem to find a point, sometimes even loses control (like when he was shooting dead body with psychotic smile until Chuuya stopped him).
Then in ADA we see this suicide-like behaviour as comedy relief but in fact that's also his way of coping with depression (more controlled, mature) where he still can't find a point but somehow got used to it after couple of years. Him turning it into a joke is another way of getting some sort of apparent control over it.

This is how I see it: dazai actually doesn't want to die (at least the bsd dazai). He just couldn't find the reason to live. If he really wanted to die he could just easily shoot a bullet through his brain in a place where no one is around to save him. Everytime he tries to commit suicide, it's almost as if he cries for help in a very comical manner.

It's like being served two dishes. One is the plain old dish that he's been eating all his life. The other is something that he hasn't really eaten before but he knows it's poisonous. He occasionally takes small portions of the poisonous dish; tasting it with the tip of his tongue just to relief the ironically painful feeling of emptiness the first dish brings. By doing it, it looks as if he really wants the second dish but in reality, he just wants to add some spice to the old and boring first dish. That's what he's looking for. The spice: Reason living.


I haven't read no longer human yet but I've seen memes about it being depression in a book form HHahah and I already have the same problem as dazai so I don't think I can read that book anytime soon. It might just even strengthen my view of life as empty, full of useless bs while lacking meaning.


But life is good my friends. If you can't live for yourself, at least live for other people (only the right ones. Avoid narcissists at all cost!!!)

Fun fact: Osamu Dazai is based on a Japanese author with the same name, he committed suicide shortly after his first ever book published and that's the reason DAZAI in bungo stray dogs is so intently commited to giving up his life

This line said by Dazai really hits hard after you read "No Longer Human" by the irl poet.
FYI: No Longer Human is an semi-autobiography of Dazai's own life depicted through the main character of the story(Ōba Yōzō). After reading that, one can understand why Dazai was shown to be so suicidal in bsd.

No bc Mori was probably most definitely going to try to use any answers Dazai gave him against Dazai- I may be over analyzing but he went from looking like his normal sinister self to looking rly excited to figure out how he could get information on Dazai to make him do what he wants.
