Putin is terrified of a coup, running scared.
Advice for Putin, stay clear of open windows.

In these systems if you are not corrupt you can't be trusted.

Howdy Prof. Gerdes. From what Inside Russia, Konstantin explained Propov was the only general not as corrupt as the rest, his actual crime was being competent and a threat to putin, who values loyalty and not competence. The rest were corrupt, which is not really their crime being punished, but rather they were aligned with the military hierarchy under Shoigu and the fsb seems to be trying to topple that system, they have the guns and soldiers and power the fsp wants for themselves.
I think this is all good for Ukraine.
Thanks for your insights.

There is no 'weeding out corruption' in Russia !!

Reminds me of the old saying, paraphrased: When the enemy is attacking itself, don't interrupt.

A Russian teacher of mine says this corruption is cultural. Way back in the old days, public officials were expected to make their living from bribes. So, basically everyone is on the take.

Obviously the loss of Shoigu made these people vulnerable but the Moscow times says this is a fight between the security services (FSB) and the military for power.

I don't think it will make any difference for Ukraine. The system is dysfunctional and won't be repaired by purging a few high ranking officials.

Arrested for "especially large bribes" :D. Apparently there is a normal expected size of bribe they exceeded.

It is only starting Prof Gerdes. Stalin executed nearly 15, 000 military officers in 1937-1939.

Corruption in Russia? Who would have thought...

During the Soviet era theft, bribery and cheating were normalized throughout their entire society. After almost a century of practice, and despite almost 30 years of "freedom, " that mindset is still prevalent at all levels. Corruption is as much a part of the Russia psyche as their insatiable need to conquer and control their neighbours. Criminality aside, we can only hope that these Generals were otherwise competent, in which case their removal can only help Ukraine.

Any kind of chaos helps Ukraine. Corruption is systemic in Russia; an official won't get anything done without back scratching and palm greasing.

I always remember that video of Prighozen yelling, "Shoigu! Garisemov!" lol.

I think it doesn't matter. The new ones coming in will be just as corrupt and incompetent as the old ones.

Keep your friends close, but keep your enemy closer, or put them in jail.

Speaking of General Kuznetsov, There was General Alexey Kuznetsov, the defender of Lenningrad who was considered a hero and great o, rganizer. After the war, Stalin recalled him to Moscow and he was eventually arrested and hung on a meat hook, because he refused to confess to trumped up charges. The song remains the same.

Corruption is intentionally baked into the system and always gives an easy excuse for getting rid of someone.

It is battle for power KGB vs. Army generals. When army generals become popular and army gets stronger they potencialy can take the political power.Stalin did purges for same reason before WWII.After Stalins death Jukov (army) atacked first Beria (KGB).

But this is what always happens in a totalitarian regime - some heads start to fall possibly for good reason (like incompetence in Ukraine). Then the differing factions - and totalitarian regimes always have competing factions, it's how the boss stays in control - start to try and take down the others with accusations and to big themselves up by taking on vacant positions. The whole system gets worse because competence is no protection against removal and neither is it a reason to get a position.
