Master Wu definitely did it unintentionally, he's wise and selfless but he's very irresponsible

I think he was actively trying to prevent it. I think he knew it was coming, and maybe did something previously that accidentally sped up the process and caused the merge to happen a lot sooner. I’m guessing he thought he could fix it himself/ didn’t want to be a burden to the ninja or make them panic, so that’s why he didn’t tell them.

In the show it said Wu "caused" The Merge to happen, NOT say he tried to make it happen

The source dragon could probably only be saved by a mortal so he contacted the son of the first spinjitzu master to help him (probably the most trustworthy mortal he could find). Wu couldn’t save the source dragon from death. The source dragon warned him about the coalescence and Wu couldn’t stop it. That is my theory as to why he blames himself

Wu has a habit of collecting enemies. Add Arin to the list that includes The Time Twins, Aspheera, Morro, Garmadon, Iron Baron and more.

What I heard about the merge was the ninja were separated during the merge, just glad to see the ninja and the main characters arin and sora.

Based on Wu's words to Nya in a Part 2 flashback give a lot of context. He talks about how "only unity can save us" and "separate we have no chance". This definitely sounds like he caused the Merge so that the realms could unite to stand a chance against... something. Maybe Ras' master? We can't know right now but it would be really cool if this event that caused Arin to lose his parents and the world to become unstable and a bunch of bad stuff to happen, is actually what, at least from Wu's perspective, is necessary to save reality itself. Seeing a conflict between the kind of necessary action Wu needed to take to save the world and the consequences of it would be really interesting.

Honestly I think killing the Overlord too many times was the Catalyst that caused the Merge given there has to be a Balance

One thing that interests me is the term of Unity. When talking to Bonzle about Garmadon he says “… we were united and bonded …”. There is also what he said to Nya. And the most important thing. What was the first title of Dragons Rising? Yeah … Ninjago United (it may have been because of the term merge but it is still interesting).

Ras and his master want to divide the realms again so what if Wu knew of the threat of Ras’ master so he caused the merge (expecting it to come later and peacefully, not like a storm) so he could unite the people of the realms against this threat (Ras’ master). It would be an interesting theory to dive into

here is what i think. in the shatterspin comics garmadon goes to the wyldness. i think maybe he picked up a kimono for himself and wu. because in the battle between brothers short they are both wearing the kimonos. so when wu banishes garmadon using the kimono it eventually caused the merge. and since lord ras is from the wyldness he would know that the kimono has that power and thats how he knew wu caused the merge. or his master just told him

Something is telling me that the Time twins are somewhat behind this problem. After all their Iron Doom is the the closest thing that is capable of causing the merge since it has a huge connection with time travel. And time itself is an important factor that has a huge contribution to the existence of reality. When Master Wu was facing the time twins in the Iron Doom which was drifting in the time portal, it is possible that the battle between the two sides could have caused some sort of time disturbance, thus causing the merge to occur years later. It's a pretty floppy theory, but that's what I think.

He did say "only unity can save us" before the merge, maybe he knew something that he felt needed the merge to happen. Like you said, maybe he didnt have enough time to make it happen smoothly

My theory is that Wu and Ras' master faced some powerful enemy together. When they defeated said enemy Wu refused to kill them, which Ras' master though was a weakness. They both knew that the enemy's goal was causing the merge and that's exactly what happened when the enemy regained their strength.

In S1 E2 Lloyd said that the source dragons was involved somehow. Maybe Wu wanted to replace the dead source dragon, who I think can be Riyu. Maybe the merge was his birth.

It is possible that he basically caused so many events that the whole structure fell apart, like him banishing gamadon, him traveling through time.
And who knows what else he might have done like what about getting the dragons for the golden weapons.

Theory - sensei wu is lord Raz's master and wants to reset the merge because he caused it and wants to reset it to the point where nobody will be harmed or lost in the merge, wu will have caused it though because he new something was coming and he wanted to save all the realms?!
