These are the top 5 Software Engineer non-programming skills that will set you apart in interviews! Programming skills aren't everything. It's much more important to me to work with a solid programmer who is a joy to be around than an amazing coder who is a jerk. Find out what other qualities we look for in new team members!

Hey, I'm John! I'm a Lead Java Software Engineer who has been in the industry for over a decade and I love teaching what I know. Learn or improve your Java programming by watching it being coded live in tutorial lessons!

Your ideas of explaining things are really amazing and crisp. I went through a few of your videos and liked them so much that now I'm going over ALL the videos one by one.
Surprisingly this video is still having only 557 views till now. But I'm sure in a few months it will be crossing a million views.

I gather from this video there are a lot of coders who don't really care about their jobs too much, not really team players, and are not great communicators.

John, there's to be made a distinction with developers in the autistic spectrum. They will not be able to answer your interview like you expect. Many developers have never been diagnosed, but who knows autism is able to recognise that. Companies are finding more and more that autistic people can be valuable resources, but they would never pass your interview. 😊

Agree, I wish companies will value these skills more.

Thank you Mr.John. Your video made me realize how valuable I should be to the company I am with as I have all those 5 things plus a few extra. I will understand now why my next interview will end up in a quick hiring offer because apparently these traits are so hard to find. 😎

I've interviewed for two jobs [not programming related] and prior to each interview there were short written tests that were meant to demonstrate writing ability - conciseness, clarity, coherence, grammar. The same type of test could be administered as part of an interview/job application for coding jobs and will surely give you a better idea of the communication skills this applicant possesses. I was a writing instructor for nearly 15 years, and I'm appalled at some of the awful writing skills a lot of people have these days.

I'm not a coder yet, still learning, but perhaps one day next year I'm interviewing for a coding job. . . .

No one is perfect, people need job they try their best, it's really hard to do all this at once, and for what for a job, we have bills and responsabilities.

What's your stance on people who have no idea what they're doing but will beat their head against the wall of 'how hard can it be' with their head until they bust through.

I was just going to pay you $50 for your course if I failed my interview today. But I nailed every question. Revature. Only company that acts like a head hunter and pays me to learn . <<<I know >>>>. I promised to start from the bottom. I finally found a spoken language that is simple enough for me to learn, Hawaiian, spent the last year there, , moved a few weeks ago to New York. Hawaiian actually has rules for how words are constructed. Maikaʻi aloha ahiahi pono mākou e

Lol. After watching this video, if I ever interviewed for you, I'd just give you those annoying answers just to drag the interview out for you.
