8 Chill Lofi Chord Progressions (Lofi Piano Tutorial)

Lo-fi hip-hop is known for its lush chords and warm chord progressions.
There’s something about lofi chords that give them a nostalgic feeling though.
The pairing of jazz harmony with a lofi aesthetic will get you there most of the time, but there are specific chords and chord progressions that can really hook a listener in.

LANDR Studio has everything you need to take a track from inspiration to release. Studio includes monthly Mastering and Samples credits, access to curated plugins, unlimited music distribution and collaboration tools.

In this video you’ll learn 8 chill lofi chord progressions that'll make any lofi jam sing.
I’ll be playing all 8 chord progressions on the piano along with some loops I’ve found. I’ll also be providing a downloadable MIDI pack so you can use them in your own productions.

I’ll be playing all of these chord progressions with the keys and note names highlighted, so it’s easier to follow along with the video. Many of the chord progressions in this video are used in lo-fi hip hop. After playing the chord progressions, I’ll be explaining why each chord progression works, and why I like it.

Which progression is your favorite? Let us know!

Another good tip is to learn a bit of Jazz chord theory if you can, as that will instantly make it easier to conceptualize chord progressions, and to make your own chill progressions.

What we called underground hip hop back in the day, is basically what people call lofi hip hop today. Same coffee music. 😆

Why call it chill lofi chords? when what the really are is, Jazz progressions!

The second chord progression is also the sound of Fishmans’ Long Season, the chillest of all albums

Many different types of progressions can work. I'm using the Japanese 4 using quintal and quartal harmonies. Think "Studio Ghibli" type of sound.
Another common/basic modal Jazz technique is just a lateral movement between your 1 - 2 and 7 chords so something like 1 -2 - 1 - 7 type of progression whilst utilising 7ths, 9ths 11ths and 13ths so long as there are no HANS and if you wanted to be a bit more ambiguous in the sound, go from using tertiary harmony (triadic chords) to quartal harmony ( chords built using stacked 4th intervals).
Plenty of other options out there although if working in modal harmony rather than functional harmony, people out there would want to avoid dim chords and dominant 7ths otherwise you'll most likely fall back in to functional harmony.

The Gmaj7 to Gmin7 to Amin7b5 is my favourite functional progression because of the modal interchange between the Gmaj and Gmin and the Amin7b5 pulling the listener strongly back to the resolution on the Gmaj7. (Imaj7 to imin7 to iimin7b5 leading back to the Imaj7 = easy listening).

Landr tries so hard to sell us mastering services when really they should just sell us more Peggy.

I liked the first one. Simple, relatable- all I have to do now is find a way to play it with one hand.

Brilliant progressions, especially for classically trained brains! I think, the progression number 7 has to have F#min7, because if we take the Gmaj7 as the tonic F# would be the 7th step on the scale. Easier to remember or transpose

that was awesome thanks for the ideas!
