Man if this scene isn't peak storytelling i don't know what is
1 you understand why both characters are acting the way they are. Ralph is doing this to save venellopes life. Venellope is acting the way she is because she sees Ralph's actions as betrayal.
2 before Ralph crushes the car you can see that he never wanted to do it that way.
3 Ralph doesn't immediately crush the car he tries to get her not to race peacefully by talking to her about it.
4 venelopes reaction to her car getting crushed always makes me emotional
5 Ralph clearly shows regret in his eyes before after and while he crushes the car

Im a grown ass man and this scene has made me cry more than once.

This scene is literally the peak of this movie, and a prime example of great storytelling .

Edit: some people in the comments can’t seem to believe or understand why this scene pulls at my heart strings, so I’ll elaborate:

Honestly, watching Ralph’s progression through the movie was well done. Maybe he wasn’t 100% happy the way his life was, but he got on by.

When we reach this scene, “King Candy” tricked Ralph into doing his bidding, the whole time Ralph believing he was doing something good.

Conflicted between Ralph’s injected belief that Vanellope’s game will be unplugged if Vanellope races, and Vanellope’s dream of being a real racer, we are presented with this painful conversation (including the part that was not shown in this clip).

As the music crescendos (very nice touch as well) Ralph takes one good, long look at his hands.

These are the hands he has always used for “bad” things in his game since he’s the “bad guy”, but as he grips them shut, you can feel that this is literally the first time he has ever done anything truly bad with them, the whole time Vanellope is crying in the background begging him to stop.

After he is done destroying Vanellope’s dreams, she glitches off the branch, and scampers off whimpering.

As he stands there towering over the ruins, one can imagine that Ralph is asking himself if he has *truly* done the right thing.

What’s not included in this clip, is right before Vanellope runs off crying, she tells Ralph “you really are a bad guy”.

I felt that.

I didn’t even go into detail the absolute betrayal Vanellope is feeling the whole time. This was probably her one and only true friend and he’s not even from her game. He hyped her up and was *this* close to making her dreams come true, only to literally crush them before her eyes right before she is about to race.

This scene is so incredibly powerful in so many ways.
0:55 The point where a switch flips in the VIEWER'S head at the same time as Vanellope's. Both characters and the audience realizes what's about to happen and NOBODY wants it to actually happen. So much tension within 6 seconds.
1:02 This part is framed like an actual murder scene. Keeping the horror mostly out of view but with full awareness by the audience what's really happening. Sarah Silverman completely nails the voice acting here. It's like her soul and dreams are being crushed as if a loved one actually is being killed right in front of her eyes.
1:20 When Vanellope says "You really are a bad guy." Ralph loses all hope of thinking he can change. It's just pure betrayal from Vanellope's point of view, and pure loss from Ralph's.

Gets me every time, thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

Have any of you felt this is the equivalent of King Triton destroying Ariel's collection of human treasures, culminating in the destruction of Prince Eric's statue?

It's been years since I first watched this movie when it came out. I was around 5 or 6. This scene made little me cry lol. I'm in highschool now, and it still genuinely makes me sad. I can understand why Ralph did it though.

For me it's when the realization hits and her voice starts cracking.
at first shes like, wait a minute.... then it fully hits her and she cracks up saying no.

This scene is a master class for both characters because Ralph isn't realizing it here, but he's being a bad guy and breaking stuff for a good cause.

1:00 - 1:08 That's incredible acting right there.

Now if only there was a video of Sarah Silverman recording this scene.

Watching this as a child you just see this as another sad Disney scene.
When your older you see that this scene is a masterpiece and one of Disney's best scenes from any of it's films.

This might be THE only emotional part of the movie.
But it’s SO heartbreaking after everything they’ve been through together. 😢
