This serie is really nice. It's 4 year old but fun to watch again. Since early last year this is not how the training is anymore, new turboprop trainer plain (SK40) for their first training period, then they go to IFTS Galatina Air Base in Italy for training on jets (M-346), then they come back to Sweden for training on JAS 39.

Kent.

At about 5:50 the guy in the port side seat still has the protective cloth cover on his sun visor, up on the helmet. Even though they are taxying. I think he is supposed to remove that earlier. There was an incident a long time ago where the pilot only found out he forgot, once he lowered the sun visor and suddenly could see nothing. 🙂

I was an ifv commander for the FDF for my service, and I have to say your comments about navigating with a moving vehicle certainly brought back some memories. Especially since we were pretty much thrown into the deep end almost immediately and just kept training and training until it just became something that you did almost subconsciously; Coordinating both the tank crew as well as other vehicles and infantry in the platoon, giving directions to the driver and alignments for the gunner, figuring out and keeping up with where you and everyone else is on the map while constantly moving, looking at what kind of terrain is coming up and planning for that, looking for covered position to move in between of as much as possible, trying to predict where the enemy could be and having your eyes and barrel ready for that direction/spot as soon as it became clear, the whole radio and coms setup with the platoon and company... And that's just moving around. When you make contact with the enemy it becomes even more chaotic, calling for immediate decisions so you have to have a good situational awareness ready at all times in before hand.
Still I have to say that once it 'clicked on' for the first moment, when your actions became more natural and instinctive and you had a good situational awareness at the back of your head without consciously building towards that, well it was almost magical.

Swedish pilots have a very long training, lasting for many years. This is comparable to a country like the USA, where they have a much shorter training period. Sweden has ofc a much smaller population, so the quality of our pilots have to be top-notch across the board. Less pilots to train, so they are trained for longer.
This can be seen in the results of several "Red flag" excercises in which Swedish pilots faced off aginst Americans, and won. If you disregard the equipment used by either side, it mainly compes down to pilot experience.

I would say the subtitles are like 97% accurate so far. I notice just a single word here and there that is a bit of. So you're good to go mate.

When they say hockey, they mean ice hockey. And I guess they are not going to play themselves, they are either going to watch a match on TV, or they are going to the local game, in Linköping. The local team, LHC, Linköping Hockey Club, is the biggest thing in sports in town. No big football team, nothing else really. Just ice hockey, it is an ice hockey town. I heard LHC has the biggest budget of all hockey teams in the top Swedish ice hockey league. So it's a big thing. The local ice hockey arena is Saab Arena. So named because it is sponsored by a local company that builds things you might have heard of.
