Love your explanation of the title at around 15:30, very relevant to today still. Having never read the book, I legit thought the title referred to some type of machine that could launch horses in the sky or something.

What I recall most is the repeating motif wherein the author describes the feeling of the vibration of the ocean underneath up through the pier and the “balls” of his or their feet…

“Balls” is very tactile and suggestive of any number of relevant associations.

Something I love about the language of the hard boiled style of storytelling. Perhaps my memory distorts….
