I read somewhere that this could be not at the start, but at the end of the series, after Charlie's plan fails, so the interview would be the actual start. She does sound like she failed.

I’m told that the beginning is actually the end where Charlie fails to redeem any demons.

During the song, we see the end of a series, the climax of where Charlie has given up, tearfully admitting defeat and no longer believing in herself nor the fact that people can be redeemed. After that intro, we are taken to the previous year’s aftermath of a cleansing, where Charlie has so much determination and hope that she has no shame in singing in front of others and seems to believe that the world can be perfect, which is the opposite attitude Charlie had from the intro.

If this is the case, then it would make sense. It would also shock people as they would have no idea that they already saw how it ended and would force many to rewatch and analyze the entire show (that is, if it is continued).

I've never noticed how much this song is similar to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Both Dorothy and Charlie are wishing for better circumstances and want to do more with their lives. Their both pining for something better.

I have to say that even with the ost of the first season out, this song is still my favorite. It just has this haunting sadness to it that really delivers Charlie’s feelings of desperate hope for a change and sorrow over feeling alone in all this.

This song sums up one great difference between Pilot Charlie and the serie Charlie:

The original knew her idea was what semed like an impossible task, a fantasy like chasing a rainbow. She was depressed and doubtful of herself but nevertheless trying despite all. Barely holding herself emotionally even for her personal issues and always thinking about not doing enough herself. Despite all her failures she endures and carries on putting up a smile trying her best to have a shard of hope or proof about redemption and puts all the blame on herself.

The serie Charlie acts like it's an undoubtful truth she's right but everyone don't get it and somehow things don't work like they're meant to and she can't figure out why. Undoubitably she believes she's right and doesn't have the slightest doubt her plan will fail and things not working out are someone or something else fail but she can't figure why because she thinks she's doing her best and great nevertheless. She doesn't even try to put effort into doing things and anything can be claimed as a victory or a fail depending on her mood and situation (the hotel working because she wants to but actually not working whenever she's asked proof because it actually isn't working). We never see her doubting herself despite all and even her supposedly personal issues are solved quite easily (her neverexisting daddy issues solved in 1/4 of episode).




Even the second song "inside of every demon is a rainbow" tells us more:

Original Charlie was desperately fighting for saving sinners because she saw something good inside SOME of them and wanted to bring it out to save them.
In facing heaven arsh solution about it she was destroyed emotionally but nevertheless understood it and worked so bad to try to bring an alternative solution to solve "hell problem".

The serie Charlie believes ANYONE/EVERYONE deserves redemption because she thinks it's unfair that they're paying for their sins. She doesn't see anything but good and as a twisted vision on what's bad but regardless it's doing it more for herself than the others.
She was also facing heaven arsh solution about it but instead never spent much of her time to bring an alternative but just worked all her time to eliminate this arsh solution telling everyone it was orrible but without solving the problem by bringing any working alternative at all.
