The Australian’s Troy Bramston says the two-party system in Australia has been in “terminal decline” for some time as record-low primary votes were observed in the federal election.

Mr Bramston said the Labor Party had never won government with such a low primary vote, noting the “very narrow” Labor victory.

"Of course, the Liberal Party has lost its heartland,” he told Sky News Australia.

“The Liberal Party is in real crisis.”

“The Liberal Party is in real crisis.”

They did it all to themselves - they truly deserve it with how they treated Australians over the last 2 years.

The Aussie Constitution doesn't mention 'partys' but people who live in a region being elected by their community to represent them for a term or two, then returning to their real job.
The Labor Party was founded in 1901, the National in 1920 and the Liberals in 1944. They would have you believe that you must vote for a party. As an independent voter for the last 40 years I have watched self absorbed parties regard the voters as a necessary evil. Hopefully no more.

When they talk about 'green policies', they aren't talking about plants, trees, the ocean, animals, they're in fact saying to limit human being's mobility.

Good. Next step is an ICAC to jail these criminals.

I have never been more dissapointed or ashamed to be an Aussie.
None of the majors should have gotten in this time, anyone who looked at how we have been treated in the past, let alone the last two and a half years should be ashamed at what they did in voting for any of the major parties.
I don't want to hear anyone crying when this gets worse, it's our own fault.

Neither Major party has my vote but somehow my vote ends up trickling down to them. How does a Duopoly equal a Democracy? When can a minor party bump off an unpopular major party?

A return to a truly representational system is needed, and that is first past the post. The first to reach 50% is nominated and then see how the rest of the votes count for a final result. Simple and foolproof.

It seems like its voting for a master and the system treats people as dogs. Do you want a government or a corporation holding your leash?
Last thing either want is to let you off your leash.

At least Labor has been able to form government on their own (even if it is slim) the last thing I think any of us want is for government to have to constantly make deals with these teal independents any time they want to get anything passed.

‘Terminal decline’ in honest journalism coming from Sky news again.

The main thing is that Australia as a country is moving back to the left and on the weekend, flatly rejected the far right extremists! Thank god for that ❤️

I really love the diversity of choice we have. The preference system ensures that. I don't vote 1 for either major party and I like it that way. I know by the 2nd or 3rd spot it hits a major party and that's where my vote will ultimately land.

I haven't voted for a major party in 20 years and never intend to do so again. Glad to see others finally catching on.

Vote system need to be changed ASAP.With 33% primary vote and 7 out of 10 vote against new Pm is not good enough to be in charge.
