GNU Linux Vs Linux

People keep saying, "It's not Linux" "Linux is just the kernel" "It's GNU Linux you Idiot". Yeah posers go back to grade school, I've been running Linux since the days before it had a GUI. There are definite Non-GNU versions on of Linux, and While Gnu Linux is Linux not all Linux is GNU

GNU is almost complite system (libs and applications) but without kernel. Linux is kernel (layer without ui, between hardware and software) and is compiled on gnu compiler using gnu-libc (sometimes eg: llvm, musl, uclibc, busybox, etc - to make it smaller/more lightweight - for weaker hardware). Gtk is gnu/gimp toolkit, gnome is gnu desktop environment, bash is gnu shell, etc. You mean GPL license. Kernel Linux is licensed on GPL2, google can't change that. GNU is everywhere even if you have few closed source apps on top.

@Worfox13 Your original point is mostly right. You can have things that are GNU that are not Linux.

But you can build a closed source Linux Distro that only interacts with the kernel. The kernel would still have to be Opensource, but there are "bring your own kernel" distro's

@Worfox13 It is licensed under other models as well. It is AVAILABLE under GPLv2 but you can cut a check and not have to do that.

Linus has stated repeatedly Linux IS not GNU.

Similarly, the fact that rms and the FSF has tried to paint Linux as a GNU
project (going as far as trying to rename it "GNU/Linux" at every
opportunity they get) is their confusion, not ours.

That is RMS trying to take credit for the movement Linus started. Knowing both of them, Linus often leaves me in awe of his brilliance, and RMS often leaves me in awe of his ignorance.

@greggh Linux is AVAILABLE under GPLv2 you can license it under other licenses as well. This is the reason it never went to GPLv3 and Linus and Stallman had a falling out. Ever after Linus has called it "New" as an attack on Stallman.

@BlackwaterOpsDotCom Again. You are confused. Yes, the Linux kernel is copyrighted. The copyright license that Linus chose is the GNU GPL v2. Linus continues to use the GNU GPL v2 for all releases of the Linux kernel. Linus is the copyright owner of the Linux kernel, so he is free to choose another license for any new release of the software going forward. He doesn't do that. He still chooses to be a part of something Stallman created.

Expat is an MIT license, and is one of 4 licenses that Linus licenses Linux under.

GNU was a project which started making packages before anything else. It failed in the end because no kernel was actually made. So richard pulled a move to try to push linux is GNU kernel and basicly claiming linux as his work when it wasn't. GNU was packages made by a community ported to linux, bsd, and even windows. Many of the GNU packages have to deal with video streaming & codecs along with using apple & microsoft devices and formats.

Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

@BlackwaterOpsDotCom I'm genuinely confused by your comments about the pronunciation of Gnu. I want to ask you these two questions very seriously. Do you understand that Richard Stallman is the person that named it Gnu? And do you understand that he has repeatedly explained from the beginning that it is pronounced "guh new?"
