Singapore executes man for trafficking cannabis

Singapore has executed a man for helping to sell marijuana, despite appeals from the UN and human rights groups. This is the 12th execution in 16 months by the city state. It is in stark contrast to neighbouring countries like Thailand and Malaysia, which have either banned or strictly limited the death penalty for almost all offenses. Shoaib Hasan has the latest.

I’m in no position to say what’s right or wrong, but I think anyone who sees this will think twice about trafficking drugs to Singapore.

Looking at the condition of the West, we can see that strict punishments are the only way to prevent crime. That's why there's so much crime in the US and UK compared to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Also, it's interesting to see how the Human rights organizations speak up about this issue yet there's radio silence when it comes to grave crimes being committed. It's like they care more about the perpetrators than the victims.

That’s rich, an American lecturing others about how to handle crime.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

You know the country's rules. You decided to test these rules. You then get caught. You must now pay the price. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. As simple as that

It's the law, it's been the law for decades and the citizens of the country like that law so there's nothing to discuss and the UNCHR should focus on things that matter like the conflicts in Sudan, Ukraine and Myanmar

You have already known what you will get when you are trafficking drugs and get caught. Money or life.

"Right to life" OK... what about right to every single innocent lives? What if your son/daughter caught up with drugs? If your daughter was drugged, what else can happen to her? I can expand these questions to so to say friends, relatives... you name it. Yeah so what IF a young girl was drugged! Would there be anything else happen to her?
For that I'm glad there are mandatory capital punishment for this. Innocents lives will be saved one way or the other or even several.

I don't like execution as punishment for dealing cannabis, but law is law and people who live there need to respect it. Otherwise go to the US or other places to live where cannabis is legal.

This American has no right to lecture Singapore. Their country, their rules…

I can understand it in a way.
If you become lenient for even a little, people will take advantage because they know its just a slap on the wrist. Drugs wreak havoc on the society. Its about all of us being safeguarded.

Good to see Singapore taking a firm stand against trafficking of narcotics. Singapore has every right to keep their citizens safe and secure. The UN needs to simply disappear, it serves no purpose.

Those who are against these laws imagine your son or daughter gets addicted to drugs and commit sucide who will you blame it for then?

It's the one thing that almost everyone knows about Singapore. It works. Only a complete ignoramus would smuggle drugs there. It's harsh and grim, but if they weaken the line, then there will be a deluge.

I remember Lee Kuan Yew interview from back then, even he expressed amazement how people still try to commit drug related crimes. Despite Singapore openly warns that it's punishable by death. In Singapore.
