President-elect Donald Trump has promised to deport millions of immigrants in what would be the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. One cost estimate has his plan at $315 billion – that’s more than the government spends on most federal agencies. Roughly 13 million immigrants who entered the country illegally are at risk of deportation.

WSJ breaks down the logistics and explains why an operation of this scale could require hundreds of billions of dollars over the course of a decade.

How does it cost 200 dollars a day to keep someone in a cage and borderline starving and most hotels are cheaper than that? Some people are getting crazy rich off of this and our tax dollars

This will be a huge cash grab for private contractors. It's a new cash flow for the prison industry.

I am against this entire plan, it’s inhumane and impractical. But if this administration really cares about illegal immigration so much, why don’t they focus their money and energy on keeping more people from coming in illegally? Let’s face it, deporting 13 million people is an almost impossible task. It took decades to reach this number. It’d be easier to keep the number from growing than to send all these people back. And i think illegal immigrants with no criminal record who’ve been in the US for decades should just be given citizenship. Clearly they’ve proved they’re not dangerous and they’ve been living and working here all this time anyway.

They could just give out a $10, 000 fine to every America company for each illegal worker they hire.

Imagine creating a problem so big that it will be too expensive to fix

Why does Trump need any funding at all??? Let those employers who break the Federal law pay for all deportation-related expenses.

my mom works as a payroll assistant, got a house for 300k in the suburbs, has two cars that from the year 2025 and a fully paid off truck from 2015, two native american children, married to a us citizen, has 1000+ hours volunteering at schools, pays all her taxes, pays all her hoa fees, has a credit score of 650 ish and has sent applications over to uscis for over 12 years, just for her case to not even be looked at, and then gets called a criminal for coming to the country 18 years ago as a MINOR. My mother is clearly the problem and should just be sent to another country where she has nothing and expected to leave everything she has built just because someone orange felon billionaire decides that is the best thing to do. The saddest thing is that she would probably be one of the first million to leave because she has been keeping up with her annual ICE appointments where they review her record and see if she’s allowed to stay for another year!! Can you imagine the fear she goes through every. single. year. This is absolutely unjust and the US government seems to get dumber and dumber. I’ve seen outright stupid ideas here in the comment sections and they still seem better than most government plans.

What is absurd about this plan, is that there are no penalties for the businesses that hire them! The main magnet for illegal immigration is JOBS, period.

'Private contractors' is the answer as to why we would be doing this. Gotta slide that money to billionaires.

I see you guys plotting and bitching about illegals living in U.S however there are a lot of U.S citizens living illegally in Mexico in cities like CDMX, Cancun, Queretaro, Merida etc, they don't pay taxes and they get a free pass

Had anybody talked to an economist about the impacts of this? How will it impact the price of food? Construction? Economic areas with a lot of illegal labor? So many areas of this complex topic aren’t being discussed.

During President Barack Obama's administration (2009–2017), approximately 3 million individuals were deported from the United States. This period saw a significant increase in deportations compared to previous administrations, earning Obama the informal title of "Deporter-in-Chief."

AS LONG AS THERE'S AN EMPLOYER WILLING TO HIRE THEM, PEOPLE WILL FIND A WAY TO GET HERE.

What's completely missing here is the actual "cost" of this "problem" right now. There is probably a net benefit for the U.S. economy at this time, but Republicans needed this boogeyman just to distract from the real problems, e.g., wealth inequality, and 31% of the voting populace fell for it.

That those tricky problems don't have easy solutions that won't create their own issues is, of course, already too complex for a dumbed-down populace to grasp, not to mention the difficulty in recognizing the real problems in the first place.

Simply put, we have enough calories to feed everyone on Earth many times over, and people are still starving right this second. Moving people from place A to B and building a wall to keep them there will fix nothing except the account balances of a few already wealthy people.
