If you're cheap, just use a stainless drum from a washing machine. It's got the airholes and everything.

When you get any steel, including stainless steel to sufficient temperature it will oxidize which means it does rust. Stainless steel is “resistant to rust”. But it will. The key is keeping the surface clean and free of salts or other corrosion accelerators. Ash itself is a corrosion accelerator. So clean it and it will last.

I use an old washing machine tub for a fire pit. Works great. It's stainless steel and has a ton of holes in it for air flow.

Stainless steel will rust with high temperature. It’s more resistant than mild steel, but it will still rust and degrade.

Do be careful with the stump tip, roots can burn for days and spread fires, just FYI guys....keep in mind to that can be 50+feet away from the stump...

I have a stainless steel log burner that folds flat into a little case; designed for bell tents. Brilliant but can’t let it get too hot for too long, or the bottom glows red and would melt through.
Also have seen little TEG stainless steel fan driven mini stoves, super cool!

Last a year? Good lord... My family used an old 55 gallon drum filled with .22LR holes for seven years and it was still good to go.

Vented on the bottom is great, but from about halfway up, they need to reduce the slots by about 70%. It acts like a chimney and creates an updraft of air which in turn excites the chemical reaction in the burn process.

Stainless steels *can* still oxidize, they're just vastly more resistant to it.

Cool idea for stumps but I'll stick with a 55gal drum then insert air holes with bullet holes drill bit or saw cuts.

Our burn barrel rusts out in about 6 months...but we live in north Florida where it gets extreme weather and high humidity...helps everything decompose fast.
