i'm sure it's fine as long as you keep the elves happy.

Wow. That "glaciers contain echoes of deadly cracks" line gave me goosebumps!

Yes, actual lyrics from an actual lullaby. It's called Sofðu unga ástin mín. (go to sleep my young love)

"The sun is so red, mom, and the forest so black. Now the sun is dead, mom, and the day has passed away." <- Danish lullaby.

Reminds me of a children’s bedtime story my Russian step mom told me as an adult. It was cute and sweet, and ended in the crushing of the main characters lifelong dreams and also the crushing of his body.

My lullaby went: Hush little baby, don't say a word and never mind that noise you heard. It's just a beast under your bed, in your closet in you head.

A lullaby that goes from maternal love to depression and ends with existential despair

Reminds me of, "rock-a-bye baby on the tree top..."

I see that our Swedish lullaby about a troll that ties up her sleeping children by their tails and sings her most beautiful song to them, is a very sweet and gentle song.
It feels like we missed out…

I am flying out to Iceland next month. All of the stories that I hear from you (sarcastic or not) make me love Iceland even more. I am super

Traditional lullabies seem geared more toward giving kids nightmares than ensuring good sleep.

And the baby slept forever after the mother sang this lullaby to it … literally, the song is about a woman killing her child by throwing it into a waterfall

My grandma sang me Ghost Riders in the Sky as a lullaby, so... yeah, the tradition lives on.

Finnish has the lullaby "Tuu, tuu, tupakkarulla" which is about chewing tabacco.

I'm norwegian and one of the lullabys my parentes sang for me was about three travellers: one was limping, one was blind and one was mute. Ah, memories😅
