that's incredible. I can't imagine making hundreds of these by hand

That smith in the drawing is having the time of his life. 😂

Whoa, that looks like a whole lot of work! I always though they were like rivitted ones, but somehow forge-welded shut instead of rivitted.
Or by making a tube and then cutting it into rings.

Interesting! I've never seen it done this way before.
I've seen (and made) mail from wire.

You could make a die for the inside and outside of the ring and punch them out with much less effort than it would take to make them by hand like that.

"Yeah, so, how do I say this... We have 10000 soldiers. Yeah, they all need chainmail. Yeah, the horses too. Yeah, sorry, I know it's a lot, but I need them for next spring. Ok bye bye thanks love u."

Ive seen a drawing of "punch guide/block" tool that accepts two punches: one to make the middle hole then one to punch out the ring using the hole as a guide.

No clue if they used a tool like that in that area, but that would help with consistency and prevent the need to grind for hours.

This makes me appreciate Harbor Freight so much more! That grinding wheel...wow!

Damn that's so much effort just to get the rings, never even thought how did they get them.

that's job security right there. just imagine how proficient you get at it.

The sheer amount of man hours it takes to make just one mail coat, for the torso, for example, it is incredible. Hours upon hours of very finicky, delicate work, and you have to stay so focused and keep your hands rock steady the whole time. It's no wonder they were so expensive and still are 😂

кстати, ваша работа немного не похожа на оригинал. у вас похоже скорее на шайбу. Интересно будет посмотреть на конечный результат.

Big respect to the smiths...no wonder a mail shirt cost so much

Have you ever tried cutting a thin rod into small bits and flattening it into a tiny plate shape and then punching it? I guess lots of the technique was similar to how coin mints worked but could be wrong.

Thats why chainmail was the most expensive piece of armor and that only the mvp’s wore out in battle 👀

seems to be the most time consuming way

I feel like they would’ve had a more automated process/tools than this. Especially by the later medieval period

Man no way some one chose to do this over just making a chest plate. This mustve took forever to do

And that is why only rich people owned mail.

As a blacksmith you would have children for the sole reason of them making rivited chainmail
