Our ears will adapt to super silent areas and can pick up the quietest of sounds if given enough time, the sounds of trains is actually your blood circulating throughout your ears. The figure he seen was his mind trying to see any bit of light or make out shapes in a room absent of light. Hope that helps

Oddly enough, they have used this room to help treat some veterans dealing with PTSD and other issues and the some of the vets said that it was the only place where didn't hear the sounds in their head anymore. They said it was the most calm they had ever felt and many asked to stay in there longer than an hour
