I like videos like this. I get some tips on dealing with old machinery and it's kind of nice seeing that I'm not the only one who has projects that "should be pretty easy" take a shit-ton of time to complete 😉

When I heard paint was going on the motor, I got unreasonably excited. Guess I love seeing old machines like that get some love.

Putting the wire wheel on that grinder was slick I love it

I spent a good part of my youth as a tank/heavy equipment/heavy truck mechanic. Some power train systems are meant to be pulled with the engine and transmission together as a unit. Given the difficulty reaching those two bolts and the pain in the ass that those input shafts are going to give you, I suspect this is one of those systems.

So how hard would it be to yank the transmission out of this? My approach would be to pull the trans & install 12" studs in the bellhousing holes at 10 & 2 o'clock to hold the trans in alignment. Set the inner trans shaft to match the engine (maybe take a small grinder and slightly taper the sides of the splines to help alignment). Set the clutch and outer spline as close as possible.

Then slide the trans onto the two studs and slowly bring them together. As long as you can get the inner shaft to line up and go in, you're golden. Once it's it, you can put the trans in first gear and slowly rotate the output shaft. On most transmissions, you can actually _feel_ the shaft splines line up when done this way.

Given that the inner shaft seems to be connected directly to the crankshaft, you may be able to bar the engine over to line the splines up.

If I lived anywhere nearby I'd come over and give you a hand, but I'm up in northern Idaho.

Best of luck to you!

11:21 Those cracks are just heat-checking and are completely normal. Yep, have it resurfaced. Smart. You might consider replacing the rear main seal at this point if it's showing any signs of leakage. Also, the cross-shaft and bushings on the transmission are pretty easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. If they're worn, there's no time like now.

Cracks in flywheel surfaces are Normally found when replacing a clutch. Used to call them heat checks. Regrinding the flywheel normally removes them. Your machinist can tell you how much he can safely remove from the flywheel surface.

Banana clutch rod - that's factree. And that's the most love that engine's seen in 30-40 years, I reckon.

If you entirely paint Christine like that, and put some shine on her, she'll become a "going to town" unit for sure !

I use a small pipe wrench to turn out broken bolts and studs like that. The harder you pull, the more it bites in. Of course liberal application of the hot wrench helps loosen things

Based on what you've uncovered to this point, I'd say it's a project definitely worth carrying through to fruition. That grader will come in so handy for you, as you mentioned, in grading the gravel on your drive and, once you've got your house done, plowing snow to get you on and off your property in the ole winter time.
