EXCELLENT advice--especially putting on life jacket BEFORE attempting rescue! Thank you!

Just got caught in one of the notorious Lake Michigan rip currents two days ago. I was playinng in the waves when out of no where I was further out from shore and unable to touch the bottom. Crazy how fast they can move you!

My son fell off the lighthouse pier running from a wave that scared him. The people that eventually came to save us are true heroes. My son and I owe them our lives, literally.

I live by Lake Michigan. I am always surprised at the stupidity of people getting into the lake when the red or double red flags r flying. Seeing those kids jumping off the pier gives me nightmares.

I grew up on Oak Street Beach on Lake Michigan in Chicago. I was taught at an early age to always Respect Lake Michigan..

Coast guard just pulled a kid’s body out of the lake a few days ago. I don’t understand why people swim more than 20 feet out knowing how strong the currents are

The rip currents, the power of the lake during storms is insane

As someone who grew up in Wisconsin swimming in it, it can humble you at anytime. Never get cocky/confident to the point of ignorance. Might be the last mistake you make

The under tow is a current. There's a 3 foot under water, one in Lake Michigan. If you hit that, you're under water. The current doesn't let you surface. This happens on the Milwaukee River too. We had someone swimming off a beach and disappeared has been happening more. 58 on Lake Michigan so far this year. Cities messed with the lake. Doing construction things. They moved the light house and extended the pier. A two mile tunnel was dug under the lake. The water intake valves were moved. This all interrupts the current flow.

I didn’t realize the Lake Michigan was to blame for their deaths.

Dave Benjamin has an excellent program to inform swimmets about rip cutrents, and how communities can install life jackets and rescue/ safety equipment at their beaches. He really showed us in Port Washington WI several ways to kerp our citizens safe while enjoging Lake Michigan. Thanks, Dave!

I was a lifeguard in the summer of 1983 at Oak Street Beach. I saved quite a few people. I was all state swimmer in high school too. I participated in the annual two-mile lake swim, sponsored by the Chicago Park District.

This is my hometown, Holland, Michigan. So many people come here that don’t understand the power of the current. They carelessly ignore the red flag warning’s to their own peril.

Grand haven people always jump off the pier

My husband and I have had a boat in Grand Haven for the past 4 years and several times every single year there are people who swim at the beach on red flag days (which means no swimming allowed) and end up drowning or nearly drowning and have to be rescued. Irresponsible people should not be putting the lives of rescuers at risk.

The water can be unbelievably cold on 100 degree day take your breath away when you jump in the lake

My family and I went to the Chicago lake front in the winters. We would always marvel at the giant ice sheets that broke apart and piled up on the shore like giant clear glass tables.
