Alexandre Desplat has become the go-to composer for Wes Anderson, and won his first Oscar for 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'. For this 2018 Japan-themed offering, he used a lot of percussion and male choir to create a pervasive mood throughout the film. This tense potential poisoning scene is a perfect example.

Written and Directed by Wes Anderson, with Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Kunichi Nomura also contributing to the story. Starring Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Greta Gerwig, Bob Balaban, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDorman, Harvey Keitel, F. Murray Abraham, Ken Watanabe, Liev Schreiber and Yoko Ono. Music by Alexandre Desplat, perfomed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Visuals are so great people forget to mention the music.

Love how the chef still put in his best effort into the food, even though knowing the guy was gonna die from eating it

I love how he just barely tapped the poison with his tongue and it was enough to kill an elephant 48 times over

0:58 there is wetness under the latex gloves from hand sweat. As someone who makes a lot of models and wears a lot of gloves, I appreciate that detail.

A masterpiece of stop motion animation to show how professionals do the job even when they include the wasabi poison.

In Japan, the number 4 is Shi, which when written and pronounced heavily resemble the Japanese word for Death. Because of this the number 4 is considered extremely unlucky and spells disaster. Buildings will purposely skip labeling the fourth floor and people will avoid taking one of something from a set of four. However, if you want to make doubly sure that someone you don't like is cursed, you would do so by giving them something in a set of 4 with a distinct difference with the fourth item.

This scene changes after watching a certain movie called Padak

This scene is very satisfying, like Woody being repaired in Toy Story 2.

Imagine if the guy was just like "Meh, I don't want *Yellow* wasabi"

The scene alone took eight months to make, the whole movie took two and a half years to make. The animators deserve more credit

The animation is beautiful. The attention to detail is great especially how the fish continues to move it’s mouth after beheaded is crazy

They could have skipped this entire segment and make it where the man put poison on the sushi BUT they really want show how much effort and detail when making this scene and I’m glad they did

Interesting detail that’s really easy to miss: He wraps the other half of the fish in plastic wrap so it stays fresh for next time.

4 pieces of squid, one laced with poison. This one detail is just so incredible because
•Number 4 is associated with death in Japan
•A set of 4 things with one thing different, even if that one thing is helpful, is considered curse
•Live cephalopods are considered a "deadly delicacy" in S.E. Asia, but in this case, the dead cephalopod is the deadly delicacy

And so much other amazing things in this entire scene.

0:56-1:02 just those few seconds must have been hellish for the animators, the sweaty hand under latex glove effect probably had them pulling hairs just trying to capture every fold with accurate human movement.

0:15 Is no one gonna talk about how clean he took that out?

I want to know what a real sushi chef thinks of the preparation

Notice how at 0:39, he hesitates before picking up the poison? Thought that was a neat touch.

0:16, subtle detail that you might miss

Watch what each component is placed into the bento box. Not only does he place the claws in, but the crabs eyes aswell

You can tell they are the eyes, as the black dots vanish off the crab to the right
