University policies and procedures around academic integrity have been slow to adapt to changing technology, particularly with the emergence of ChatGPT and other generative Artificial Intelligence. We analysed 100 news articles from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States to examine Universities’ responses to ChatGPT. In this presentation, we will discuss how our university is positioning academic integrity policy to address these concerns, and how feedback and input from students should shape our decision making.
Andrew Kelly is the Manager, Learning Support at Edith Cowan University and the current Vice-President of the Association for Academic Language and Learning. His research focuses on student support, academic integrity, and the evolving role of generative artificial intelligence in learning and teaching.
We acknowledge the work of our colleagues, Dr Paul McLaughlan, who co-authored the media analysis paper, and Associate Professor Katrina Strampel, who is co-authoring the upcoming work on student voice.

We welcome comments and questions in the comments section below.

Good to see such thoughtful and nuanced analysis of Gen AI from students. I hope institutions will create opportunities to hear students' voices in discussions around AI policy

Excellent analysis, thank you. I wonder if you could pause a bit longer when showing the quotes on screen? I didn't find there was enough time to read them.
