Tip, measure your existing worn out sheets, go to the fabric store, pick out a fabric, buy a little more than you think you will need, cut and size it as necessary, sew a straight simple hem for the flat sheet and for the fitted sheet 1 gather a whole lot of fabric using elastic, or 2 just make another flat sheet that is bigger and can just be tucked under the mattress.
Or, realize that fabric is actually really expensive (even the cheap cottons) and this is a lot of work and your not sure how to do it well so you just burn you attempts at making sheets and go back to Walmart to buy a set.

Tbh getting good sheets (at least 1000+ thread count) is such a quality of life booster. Absolutely worth saving up for or asking for a gift for your birthday or whatever.

Out of curiosity I did the math on how much it would take to make a fitted cotton sheet for a twin xl mattress that’s 8” thick. Keep in mind this is a lower quality cotton meant to be used for clothing, so really this is just a “make it work” type thing and not for über comfort or whatnot.

-$59.96CAD for 157.48”x47” of cotton (smallest amount of fabric you could get from this site that would cover the entire mattress, since it comes in 1.2mx1m (47”x39.3”) sections.)
-$4.95CAD for 250m (820.21ft) of cotton thread (better to be safe with amount of extra thread you’ll have than run out)
-$7.50CAD for 6m (19.685ft) of braided elastic

That’s assuming you have an iron, sewing machine, needles, pins, and time enough to create this. Of course you could not use pins, not flatten the fabric, and sew by hand but have fun with that.

-The cheapest well rated machine I found was the singer m1000 for $119.99CAD
-Cheapest set of singer universal sewing machine needles is $5.29CAD for 5.
-Cheapest iron with good reviews I found was $19.98CAD
-Cheapest set of hand sewing needles with good reviews I found was $2.27CAD for 16
-Cheapest good set of pins I found was $2.97CAD for 100

So a total of $72.41CAD ($53.43USD) for just the materials before taxes. Obviously big retailers get better stuff cheaper but sadly buying fabric as an individual is expensive as hell nowadays in comparison to before. Or $302.91CAD ($223.50USD) if you need to buy all the materials.

And again, it’s a bad quality sheet. Like, good quality cotton is expensive. Good quality linen is even more expensive apparently. Polyester that would hold up being used as a sheet is the same price as the crappy cotton. So you could get that instead. I think I’d just rather get a mediocre fitted sheet off Amazon for $20 than go through all that for a bad one. Obviously I’m not saying this in a demeaning way. I was just curious lmao

fun fact: Kraft singles aren’t cheese. They are not legally recognized as any form of cheese or cheese product by the FDA, which is why they call themselves a “Cheese Food” which is a term that isn’t FDA recognized.

I'm seriously confused by your price for sheets I've bought sheets several times for everything from a twin to a king and I have never paid more than $20 for a standard set (that includes a fitted sheet, a over sheet, and two pillow cases)
