When fighting with a long-tailed macaque, a proboscis monkey fell off in the river. Proboscis monkey are excellent swimmers, but this one was in trouble… May be injured? And boats on the river became to be a threat for him. I decided to help him. In this situation, completely improvised, with no equipment or cage, its crucial to be quick, to minimize the stress of the animal. It’s necessary to be a little hard when handling the animal, to avoid any bite. Proboscis monkey are excellent swimmers. But this female proboscis monkey is part of a group that we follow in one of our protected area in borneo. More about our work and primate rescue centers here : @t. Her group was not trying to cross the river. She was attacked by a long-tailed macaque (we witnessed the attack). The first plan was only to protect her with our speed-boat from other boats on the river. But as she was not stopping swimming in circles in the middle of the river, I took the decision to make it quicker. It was all improvised and I had no equipment, and I had to grab her tail to secure her neck, and she spent 3 seconds under water ☹ but at the end she spent less than a minute on the boat before going back in the jungle. We released her 500 m down stream from the long-tailed macaque, and she was around 300 meters from her group. We still monitor her and her group. Difficult to give you a global idea of this particular situation in one minute…
