"Angel Eyes" was composed in 1946 by Matt Dennis and Earl Brent and was introduced in the 1953 film “Jennifer”. "Angel Eyes" is a jazz standard which has inspired many interpretations. Many singers have recorded versions of the song, including Nat King Cole , Jack Jones, June Christy with Stan Kenton, Chet Baker, Shirley Bassey, Neil Sedaka, and. Ella Fitzgerald, who named it her favorite song. This wonderful version by Frank Sinatra is from his famous 1958 studio album “Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely”. This album was recorded after the break up of his marriage to Ava Gardner which was from 1951 – 1957. Gardner considered him the love of her life and it was her influence that helped get Sinatra cast in his Oscar-winning role in From Here to Eternity in 1953. That role and the award revitalized both Sinatra's declining acting and singing careers.
Ava Gardner was definitely one of the most beautiful actresses Old Hollywood ever produced. I still can't imagine this gorgeous woman being married to that shrimp Mickey Rooney. In her biography she described how Rooney used to tell anyone who would listen about the great sex they had while they were married. To which she dryly remarked "Well I guess HE enjoyed it!" She called Artie Shaw (husband#2) condescending and self centered and said Frank Sinatra (husband #3) was at a low point in his career when they were married. At this point, she was paying the bills, not Frank and not the mafia. Her auto biography was actually humorous and insightful look into her life. However, being an auto-biography, how honest can a person be? For example, she made numerous references for herself being a bit of a lush, but never called herself an alcoholic. But then, that’s show bizzz. Thanks For your comments. Enjoy!
