In this episode I learn to find water in the forest. An ancient bush craft technique, tapping birch trees can produce litres of drinkable hydration if you know how. Please only try this on trees that you own.

My name is Mike Boyd and I make videos documenting my process of learning stuff really fast. Subscribe for more upcoming videos and feel free to tell me what you'd like me to learn next in the comments.

for those watching, Mike didn't go too deep into this part but the best way to protect the tree and make sure it survives is to plug up the hole after you're done using it! Use some wood from the tree itself, maybe a branch that's fallen off, strip it of bark, and hammer it back into the hole.

Hey guys! First off I love the video and your channel but I wanted to share some important advice I have learned from my survival school (The Tracker School) regarding this method particularly on the tree and the drinkers safety. Not only is this method absolutely viable and effective, there are actually a few trees that have the ability to give you fresh water during this time of year. Birch is obviously one, but also Maple, Sycamore, Walnut etc. although Birch and Maple tend to taste the best. Something to note that’s important is for the trees whose sap has more sugar (such as maple) the water will not store for more than a day or two as without refrigeration as it will get bacteria FAST and you can get sick, Birch I believe keeps a little bit longer, but you should still really try and drink it sooner rather than later . Second I love the advice you gave about warning of the dangers to the tree, something else I’d like to add on the subject is that when selecting a tree you are limited as to how many taps you can make before you kill the tree. If it’s a one foot diameter tree you can only have one tap if it’s two to three feet in diameter you can have up to two. It’s also worth noting that you shouldn’t just let it drain constantly but give it a break after getting one liter or so. When you’re done make sure you plug the hole with a hardwood plug and try and cover the outside of it with mud. This will help protect the tree from bacteria and pests while it heals. The water you get from these trees also have huuuge amounts of vitamins, calories, and nutrients and they are amazing in a survival situation and you really should only use this method when there is no other means of water or if you can effectively heal the tree afterwards. Some other methods of getting fresh water are sphagnum moss, as well as dew, you can also dig a couple of feet in from a water source to access ground water that is partially filtered although you still need to purify it. Anyway great video, I just wanted to share some advice on the method and ways to keep the tree safe haha. Can’t wait for more if your stuff!

In Canada, it's the same principal that we use to collect maple water and boiled it to make awesome Maple syrop

Props for you doing this exactly the right way! I have done this multiple times before and as long ass you plug up the tree it will recover. The bigger the tree the less harm this does for the tree.
If you are careful and do this the right way the tree will likely not take any harm from doing this.

Great work Mike.

I use white noise for studying to not hear people around me or if the house is making to much noise. It’s like brown noise but louder.

Boil down and reduce that healthy birch water mike, and you’ll get a sweet syrup concentrate you can use as a sugar substitute. Great on pancakes!
