In Hooke's Law, the term "displacement" (x) refers to the change in length of the spring from its equilibrium position, not the total length of the spring. The equilibrium position is the length of the spring when it is neither compressed nor stretched, which is its natural, unstressed length.

When we talk about the spring being directly proportional to the displacement, we mean that the restoring force is proportional to how much the spring has been stretched or compressed from this equilibrium position. So, if you attach a mass to a spring and it stretches, the displacement (x) is the difference between the stretched length and the natural length of the spring.

The correct form of SHM derivation is:

F = -kx

Here, (F) is the restoring force, (k) is the spring constant, and (x) is the displacement from the equilibrium position. The negative sign indicates that the restoring force acts in the opposite direction to the displacement caused by the external force. proportional to the total length of the spring, which is not the case.
