👗 A Tale of Two Princesses In Blue Dress

💫 Some speculate that the blue dress Tiana wore at Lottie’s party was inspired by Cinderella’s 1950’s gown in the animated classic … but I always felt it more closely resembled Brandy’s in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1997 Cinderella

😭 I cried when we first saw Tia emerge in her blue dress in Princess and the Frog. I was instantly reminded of the first time I saw a Black Princess on screen in the 1997 Cinderella.

✨ Aside from the color pallet, both looks feature a sweetheart neckline, a slight two tone moment, a similar tiara, a curly bun hairstyle, gloves & a simialr necklace. We see some changes in sleeve design & peplum style that I would equate to the style trends of each time

💙 Tiana shows up to Lotties party in a brown dress, very similar to what Brandy wears before her ball transformation. After an incident requires a change Tiana re-emerges in the blue gown. This is the first time we see Tiana dressed as “a princess” although she has not actually become one yet. It’s the same for Brandy, when she arrives at the ball: not yet a princess but presenting to the world as one

💍 For both, this moment shows that their princess personality are not ones acquired through marriage or a man, but something that existed within them before their journey begins… before their prince is even in the picture!

🥰 Since I didn’t have Tiana as a child, I was overwhelmed at the understanding that many girls who looked like me would now see this Blue dress moment in Princess and the Frog as the first time they saw themselves as a princess, and that the same moment payed homage to the first time I saw myself as one too.
