Subtraction-fest 02 ~ Carry Method (Easy)

This (second) method is the one that I was taught in Primary School. It seems to be used less often today. In each column, if the number below is larger than the one above, then we add "ten" to the top number ... and add ten to be bottom number by adding a "1" in the next column to the left. By increasing both numbers by the same amount, the difference between them will remain the same. This is sometimes known as the "carry" method (or the "one up, one down" method).

RATIONALE FOR THIS SERIES

Some of you have expressed quite some interest in different subtraction methods/algorithms. This resulted from my posting two lengthy videos in which I explained WHY different algorithms worked.

It became apparent, however, that I needed to create a series of much shorter videos in order to DEMONSTRATE these methods (and more) without the lengthy explanations in those first two videos.

"Carry Method" is the method I was thought at school. But now that you have explained "Borrow Method" in your previous video this method somehow appears cumbersome.

With our Common Core math, this method should be included, but it isn't. The idea of Common Core, is to expose the student to the many ways of viewing a problem, so this carrying should be more "common" now, not less. Instead, I see teachers interchangeably using the term "carrying" and "borrowing" for borrowing only. Or sometimes, they say carrying is reserved for addition problems. Thank you for sharing this!
