The first type of sweep kick can deffinitely work if you time it well when your opponent lifts his leg for kicking, i've seen them working

I think the kung fu sweeps are more of an exercise because I've seen some styles that do sweeps that are normal without the whole spin and telegraph. I've also seen one guy faint a roundhouse into a sweep.

Ive been doing wado karate for a few years (try 13) and the front sweep is MUCH more effective in real scenarios. it can also be used much more easily for a counter if you close distance inside a punch.
