Where to attach your Cows Tail. WW Kayak Knowledge

Another Public safety Announcement. Not trying to sound like a preach A$$ Hole but it might be time to double check you are using your safety equipment in a way which is not putting you or your paddling friends at greater risk than they need to. Would love to hear your feedback on my thoughts and opinions as always. Hit me up in the comments.

You might do what I did with my crevasse rescue gear (also short, looped ropes) while mountain climbing. I put them inside a small pouch attached to my waist. They couldn't become tangled or catch on anything, but they were already attached and ready for use in an instant should I find myself smashed up and thirty feet below the surface. In such a situation, I figured I had maybe five minutes before the cold sent my motor skills to pieces.

Three years later are you still using one of these? It seems like ww paddlers have moved away from them. Maybe that is just my circle and my perception is off.

Where I paddle, the kayakers are warm, polite, and helpful like this. The river surfers on the other hand quite the opposite.

If using the cows tail to clip into Live bait or similar, would you swap the snapgate karabiner for a screwgate?

What do you think of the type that is a rope compared to the elastic type in your demonstration?

i use mine on my shoulder but then i have 4 knives on me one on each leg one on my back and another on my left shoulder and i have trained to use my left hand even if im right handed

I have some friends that lost someone by getting snagged on a tree by their cowtail. Some of them are now refusing to wear them. Thanks for addressing this with some simple ideas Seth.

I'm very against using these, we had a fatality in our club last year because of it. A tape and carabiner works just as well but won't snag if you go for a swim.
