Oprah is a hater! I love the way Raven described herself, by refusing to label herself!

I'm not an African-American and I get sick of hearing people label their selves like that it is not true

I too do not associate myself as being an African American. I am a brown American. My family is not African.

I agree with Raven. I am an AMERICAN, not an African-American, and I do not consider that label to be respectful or correct.

I'll stand with Raven, I've never understood why someone born in America would class themselves as something else.

As someone born and raised in Canada by South Asian immigrants, this is what I've ALWAYS felt and love Raven so much for this! We are proud of our heritage but we are not defined by it. Whenever people ask me where I'm from, they're really trying to fit me in a box and that box is "otherness". I will always respond by saying that I am Canadian, which only prompts them to rephrase their question being like "well yeah, but what is your background, where are you from? Where are your parents from?". I am not seen as one of them which is why they want to know. I. Am. Canadian. Doesn't mean don't love my south Asian culture/heritage, but also don't know the full extent of my familial history, probably like many other children of immigrants, because that information is very hard to find and it doesn't matter to me either. I am not defined by the color of my skin.
