Intel Ivy Bridge-E Upgrade Guide

Linus walks you through how to upgrade your existing Sandy Bridge E platform to the new Ivy Bridge E. It's so easy you could probably do it blindfolded. Linus even does it with the screen facing away from himself... kinda.

You really don't need anything new this go-around with the latest from Intel. You just need an LGA2011 motherboard with the X79 chipset.

Microsoft upgraded in their sleep... and the result was Windows 8.

according to msi's website their x79 boards also have USB flash. so just make sure you can do that before you buy.

High end rigs are a very, very slippery ground. It's easy to put together a load of components for 3000$ but have performance of a 1500-2000$ rig (proof of that is here on youtube). And at this performance, it's not very difficult to bottleneck something.
If you're buying these high-end components, you should have some serious field of reference, otherwise you're just gonna end up trashing a lot of money into pretty much nothing.

In the video I noticed you mentioned that you were unable to actually see the screen so you could not see what you where doing, have you maybe considered adding another screen below the camera to work almost like a teleprompter, you can see what you are working on as well as display it.

thank you so much for all the help! Any suggestions on the motherboard, something in the $330 range?

Yes it's pretty much the same, Asus calls it Ez bios, Gigabyte has the Flash utility, they all put different names on it, but 90% of all mobos support this USB flash

I'm not gonna lie, for all that I know (specially from previous gens when this also happened) It should work right as I told you, but if you are gonna spend 350-1200$ on a IvyBridge-e CPU + motherboard, I strongly suggest you to post on the Intel official website, or send a mail to their support staff.

do you think that there will be any more to come out? or just those two?

so, what if I build a new PC, don't have an old CPU available and only got the ivy bridge-e CPU, only to find out the motherboard isn't updated to the latest bios, will I still be able to access the bios and flash it?

It will boot if you install the Ivy bridge - e, but it may now work properly, (however everythin inside the bios will work), You will have to install the Ivy Bridge-e processor on your motherboard, then with another PC download the latest bios update, and do the same as linus.

People who have a 2011 system probably should know how to do this much...

I have a question. I have a rampage 4 extreme. Do i need to use 3960x when doing the bios flash or can I use the 4960x. Will it still work?

This video is great and all but i think upgrading from sandy bridge e is pretty simple. What would be better is a video on how to build a new system with ivy bridge e. Especially since microcenter... newegg... and tigerdirect are selling motherboard/cpu bundles for ivy bridge e with boards that wont post the cpu due to not shipping with ivy bridge e bioss. So unless you buy an Asus board with usb flash i dont know what all these customers are gonna do to get their system up without an old chip.

I have the file for the new uefi that supports the new cpu s, and asus  lets me do it from within my os (Windows 7 pro).Motherboard is the same as in video. Current cpu is  core i7 3820. Do I go ahead and do it that way? or do I still need to flash it?

I know what you are talking about. But tbh I don't know if they fixed it. If you really really want this CPU and they didn't fix it, you might consider to delid it. Did it wwith my i7-4770K and I lowered my temps with around 15 cel.

Most MOBO's allow for flashing without a CPU installed. ASUS and MSI are both able to do this.

Despite the smaller transistors and power consumption, heat wise it's still kinda the same. I thought the improved IHS it would have improved OC capabilities.
