The Influence Of Night Life On Art with Berghain's Sven Marquardt

Raised in the former Eastern sector, Sven picked up the camera “entirely by accident. After school I didn’t really know what to do, I did an apprenticeship as a photographer because I was not interested in going to university.” Despite this indifference, he was able to recognize that his world was one that was inherently unique and presented an equally unique set of challenges, so the need to document it proved a natural instinct. “In Prenzlauer Berg…things just weren’t accessible. We weren’t able to get vinyls, we couldn’t go out and buy leather jackets. So the fact that things were not accessible makes you creative.”

I lived in his neighbourhood in Berlin-Pankow, saw him sometimes in the supermarket. A very gentle and pleasant charakter with a philosopher's view on aspects of life.

I was at Ostgut during the Love Parade somewhere around the 2000s. I dressed normal and don’t remember any issue getting in. Totally not fond of clubs letting ppl wait and reject because of their looks or vibe.

It’s so fair to him that his piercings don’t allow him to smile. He doesn’t deserve to ever smile again.

In real life Klaus a.k.a Sven Marquard is doormen (not a bouncer but a stylist enforcing the house style) at a famous Berlin Techno night club called Berghain.
I’ve seen a documentary about the club with him being mentioned extensively and it must have been at least ten years ago or so.
Anyway I recognized him immediately as the guy working at that club in that documentary.
A club with a very strict dress code/ style code as mentioned before enforced by Sven.
And possibly by others, I don’t know but I guess it must be, he also must have his days off.
Anyway a very recognizable style.
