The karambit is from Indonesia, to be precise, from the island of Sumatra, a traditional weapon from the Minang Kabau tribe which is inspired by the nails of a tiger endemic to the island of Sumatra.

Always check for specifics on blade material and avoid generic terms like "stainless steel, " "surgical stainless steel" or "carbon steel." If it's identified as 3Cr13 Stainless don't pay more than $15 for the knife. It's not terrific steel but will suffice for an inexpensive, low end budget knive. Beware of anything less than $5 and make sure that the knife has scale, frame and screw construction for folding pocket knives or a full or through tang for a fixed blade. You can go inexpensive on a knife, but know what you are getting and don't go cheap. Whenever you can check the blade hardness with a file. You want at least 54HRC which means that a file rated at 52 should skate across the blade without biting in. The highest practical HRC you want is around 75. Much harder than that and the blade will not only be difficult to sharpen but will also be increasingly brittle and prone to snapping off. If you have the budget to drop $200-$400 on a higher end knife, then by all means enjoy. Some of us are limited to a budget of $50 maximum.

For concealed carry (backup to my Sig P365), I carry a Spyderco fully serrated Endura. A defensive knife should do two things, slash (not slice) and stab. Hell a butter knife will stab but a serrated edge will slash through clothes and flesh and leave a ragged cut. How the hell do you stab easily with a karambit?
