It refers to idiopathic and chronic intestinal inflammation.
Ulcerative and Crohn’s disease are two main types of inflammatory disease.
Its risk factors development of IBD are as follows:

A. GENETIC:
10% have first degree relative
163 susceptibility loci identified at higher levels and other inflammatory conditions such as Ankylosing spondylosis, and psoriasis.
Crohn’s disease is associated with genetic defects in innate immunity and autophagy (NOD2, ATG16L & IRGM genes).
NOD2 is associated with ileal and structuring disease (need surgery)
Ulcerative has genetic defects in barrier function
Ulcerative (severe) is associated with HLA-DR*103
UC &CD associated with genetic variants at HLA locus and with multiple genes involved with immune signalling such as IL-23, 10 pathways.

B. ENIVRONMENTAL:
UC: Appendectomy protects against UC
Common in non- smokers and ex –smokers
CD: more common in smokers (relative risk more than 3)
Associated with a low residue, high refined sugar diet.

NOTE: BOTH (UC/CD): GUT MICROBIOTA ARE CHANGED (DYSBIOSIS)
