Review of the Tiptronic gearbox! It’s great...but there are issues you need to be aware of! Watch to find out!

I love my tiptronic on the street and it’s still fun on track.

I was a manual guy only until knee issues forced me down the Tiptronic route and I’ve become a fan of it. I’ve also driven the PDK and obviously that is faster, but the Tiptronic isn’t bad at all.

For a Londoner it’s the perfect gearbox....easy in town and sporty when you hit the countryside

I have owned a 997 C2s Tiptronic and currently own a Boxster Tiptronic. The gears aren't ideally spaced for fast road/track use and it takes practice to get the best out of them but with familiarity these are great, fun autos to drive. I love 'em.

I am on my second and third Boxster now.. and Love the Tip! I trained with it on the track.. that’s where I first learned how to properly drive it! I’m having to sell it now.. and am having a really hard time letting go of it!
BTW.. you stated the Tip starts out in second gear.. but neglected to state it starts out in first in manual shift mode..!
Great video.. the more you drive the Tip and keep RPMs in the 3k rpm range, the more your going to like it.. and being able to shop or commute with it in auto shift mode.. sweet!
👍🤠👍

Absolutely agree! There is an art to driving a Tiptronic, just as there is to a manual. The car I bought had a manual, but I would have bought it if it had a Tip. With your model, you an engage manual mode directly with the buttons, the earlier Tips you could not. I also like the buttons better than the paddles because you can go up or down the gears with either hand. If one hand leaves the area of the button, the other hand usually doesn't have to. I quickly got use to shifting with both hands and loved it. You can even take off in first by just shifting into first while you are stopped, then upshift into second and third, and then the gear box will take over. The only thing the Tip lacks is the rev matching. But that is one of those adjustments in driving style that is easy to make. You can hold back your down shifts until the last second, and perform them while on the brakes. It's all most as good as heal and toeing. You're right to stay with the car you bought...just get that IMS changed.

I was looking for a good 987 Boxster S 3.4 a few years ago and found one in excellent condition with reasonable miles. However it was a tiptronic and I’d always had manual cars. I bought it and have been extremely pleased. I leave it in auto and it goes fine and is easy to drive in traffic. Glad I got it.

The Tiptronic on my 997 is great. It’s quicker 0 to 100 than the manual and you can still control the gears if you need to. I used to drive a manual but it gets old the 95% of the other time you wish you had a automatic

The problem is ‘They’. The Tiptronic is good and shouldn’t be dismissed. You develop a different driving style, which is no less enjoyable, it’s just different. In identical conditions, the Tiptronic Porsche will cover the ground every bit as briskly as a manual. A first time buyer would be making a mistake by dismissing an advertisement solely on the gearbox type. (I’ve driven both).

Very good description of the Tiptronic. I recently bought a 997 Turbo with Tiptronic. As a guy who has driven cars with manual transmission for the vast majority of my 47 years driving, including 177, 000 miles on my E39 M5, I was concerned that I might be disappointed with the Tiptronic. I'm not. I can make it be as responsive as I want it to be. I like it. Now my only concern is whether it will impact the resale value. However, it's too late to worry about that. So, I'll just enjoy it.

So true. And on the track once used to it it's pretty good. Without weak 2nd gear synchromesh issues

Great 👍🏽 vid Jay! Btw you can order 992 C2S in MT. So it’s not just on the C4S. C2 is PDK only. I ordered mine for June delivery! Can’t wait. 4th 911 but first one in PDK.

Thank you for the info. Just recently discovered your channel. I'm in the middle of considering an automatic 996. I have a standard 996 as well convertible. But I want a coupe.

I agree, it’s a very good gearbox. I personally like the gear change switches on the wheel as I prefer that they go with your hands when turning the wheel. They are easy to use, just press them up to change up, and press down to change down. If you want that fast getaway then you have to change it down manually otherwise it will start from second gear. Nice video. Thanks

I been hearing this tiptronic box goes very well with 997.1 Turbo cars. Think the maintenance and repair cost is better than PDK too.
