Chinese foreign minister warns US of “conflict, confrontation” if path doesn’t change

China's foreign minister blamed the U.S. for rising tensions between Washington and Beijing on Tuesday, and warned the U.S. that there will be "conflict and confrontation" if the U.S. does not change its path.

“The United States’ so-called competition is total containment and suppression, a zero-sum game in which you die and I live,” foreign minister Qin Gang told reporters at a news conference in Beijing, on the sidelines of an annual parliament meeting.

"If the U.S. does not hit the brakes but continues to speed down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailing or a crash, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation,” Qin said.

Relations between the two superpowers have been tense for years over a number of issues including Taiwan, trade and Ukraine. But they worsened after a controversy involving a balloon, which the U.S. said was a Chinese spying device, was shot down last month.
