Installing Headers without Gaskets WTF ??

Installing headers without using gaskets ? that was something I have never heard of before. The instructions call for a using a high temperature gasket maker to seal the surface when installing the headers. This seemed odd but for the Ls Swap in my Jeep TJ this is what was required. Will headers without gaskets cause any issues will soon find out

In my boat I had to remove the right exhaust manifold. I used red high temp RTV instead of the original steel gasket. After some years I removed the engine to rebuild it. The hull was dirty on the left but clean under the right side with RTV. I will use it on both sides for the future.

I don't use a gasket on my Ford 200 six eBay header. I used high temp orange slicone. The header bolts stay tight without a gasket. The header has zero exhaust leaks.

How did that ultra copper gasket maker work on on those headers?

That permatex silicone has a one wait time before torque then a twenty four hour cure time at 70 degrees Fahrenheit

Did you wait the prescribed 1 hour between finger tight and torque loading ? it appears you didn't on the video

I used this on an ATV carb manifold engine side. I put wayy too much lol. I had a feeling that I did so and didnt want to take any chances with it squeezing out into the intake then into the engine. Took it apart and sure enough I had a lot of it ooozed out inside the intake manifold. Used much less the second time and its been holding up fine for the last 3 years!

I'm about to put the header on my Esprit and saw Rob Dahm using this stuff while doing the exhaust on his Rx7.
Glad you showed the temp rage, 600 degrees probably won't cut it for me. The laser thermometer showed my manifold at 600 degrees during normal operation. I imagine the spikes while driving hard are going way higher.

This stuff works. Before I mate my surfaces together to see how they seal together. Using a light to see the gap, if any, before applying sealant. Some surfaces mate so well, what I try to achieve. That they dont need quite so much for a good seal. Think what you're doing. Good flush mating surfaces, lots of sealant equals to lots off squeeze out. Not good.

is it a good idea to use this along with the gasket because with the gasket alone i’m getting a nasty ticking sound so i just want to add some of this stuff on top of the gasket

Using the method show in this video applies only to Sanderson Headers. I personally have had experience with the Sanderson’s, I have them on my truck. I followed there instructions to the letter. ( Unlike this gentleman it is most important to let the RTV set overnight ) and have had zero issues or leaks in the year since!
The one thing I will say, I also questioned there recommendation for using the black RTV 82180, so much so I called them and expressed my concern. The technician explained to me that the temperature where the exhaust flange meets the cylinder head does not exceed the temperature range of the Black RTV 82180. So I said to myself, Sanderson’s R&D Department surely tested the RTV Black 82180 before printing the recommendation to use it in black and white! After that thought, I then took myself and my doubts to my garage, started the install, and in the words of Paul Harvey “ Now you know, the rest of the story”

My old small block Chevy Hooker headers would always come loose after a few hundred miles, it seemed.
They were a bitch to tighten down too because the tube was positioned right over the bolt hole. That is some interesting instructions in using silicone for gasket. I'm very curious how the silicone holds up. With my luck, if it's rated 1800 degrees, my exhaust would come out at 1801 and it would turn to shit. lol

I remember installing my equal length shorty headers on my 302 and what a PITA!

I'm aware this is now 5 years later. So, I don't expect a response. But, I'm curious how much sealant you used on each side with the 3oz tube? I noticed you purchased two tubes of the copper sealant, but saw you seemingly use just the one tube for one side and it looks like maybe had some left over. I'm in the process of doing this myself on my truck and I'd like to know if one tube would be sufficient for either side. Thanks for the video

I've blown 4 header gaskets on my truck. I'm looking for any kind of solution because clearly gaskets aren't working

I used to use MLS gaskets, now I only use this. Never had a leak Again.

How did the silicone past hold up, any leaks?

does anyone know why they recommend this gasket maker when it says 700 degrees temp of exhaust is greater than 1000 degrees and i cant get a good answer

does it requiere to put this type of seal or with the original will do ?? with out using any seal

Today, Permatex has 750 degrees fahrenheit red silicone gasket maker which they explicitly recommend for exhaust manifold headers on their website's video.

Next time, use a couple of studs to guide the headers on. I do that when pulling and installing trans, and installing intake. Makes the job easy and accurate.
